I recently bought a Gear S for Tmobile. I knew that not having an accompanying Samsung phone would limit my Gear S. Still, I wanted to be free from my MXPE in my pocket. My question is, if I can borrow a Note 3, can I use it to send apps and contacts etc., to my Gear S and then not need it and still be able to have contacts in my Gear S?

The apps I need are for email (Gmail account) contacts and the Opera browser.

Majority of the apps won't work without a phone. There is no email apps on the watch. It is all based on notifications sent from the phone app. Contacts may work but it will not sync because, again, it will need phone contacts app to sync. You will only get a stale contact list on the watch with no way to update. Opera browser is ok but it will never let you sign in through any public wifi hotspots where a sign in page is needed.

Basically, it is quite limited without a phone. You can do calls and text messages. That's about it.

I'll settle for a stale list of contacts...managed to find someone who upgraded her phone and will be getting her Note 3 free. Thanks for your reply!
