Okay, so I'm a horrible nerd/geek whatever because until 2013 I'd never seen an episode of Star Trek or any of the movies. I watched the 2009 movie and it wasn't bad, so I started watching the show on Netflix.

What in the hell? I'm 15 episodes in because I keep hearing this is the best show ever made... but every episode so far is terrible! I hope this gets better and I find Spock to be an incredibly entertaining character, but so far I think I just don't get why this has almost 50% of the fan base of Star Wars. Is it because I grew up with Star Wars and not in the 60's that I don't get this?

Also, do the colors of uniforms mean anything?

Can anyone tell me if skipping ahead to a specific point will take me to the parts that are epic and whether or not they can run independently or if you need to watch them all in order?

I know in TNG the colors of the uniform show what department you're in. Red is command, for example.

I never watched the original series. :P I think it's important because it was ground-breaking in a lot of ways, not necessarily because it's the greatest show ever. :)

Right after posting this I considered asking it to be moved to the politics section, because if it's like Star Wars, I may have just accidentally declared war by questioning it's epicness. Are you missing out on anything if you skip to the 80's version without watching the 60's version?

The colors do mean the areas that you align to. In TOS (the original series) red is science, gold is command, and blue is medical.

Also, in episode 19 season 1 I'm pretty sure I saw a guy using a Nexus 10. Not bad considering this was like 45 years ago.

I could never figure out the colors myself, but I knew that I never wanted to be the guy wearing the red shirt when Captain Kirk explored a new planet. The guy in red was always the first to get wasted.

I noticed that too!

I'm starting to change my mind. I think Spock might be my hero.

Spock really made the show. The whole concept of being half human, and of a race that doesn't show emotion, was a great dynamic. He was always so baffled with human emotions yet his mother was human. The best episode with him for me was the one where he thinks Kirk is dead and gone, because something surprising happens at the end. I don't want to say it just in case you haven't seen that episode.

It's a long running gag with fans. I saw a red shirt Star Trek plush figure in one of those claw grab vending games and my first thought was, "I know of one plush that isn't getting rescued." XD

I never was a fan of the original series either, more of a TNG and Voyager fan. I'm also not a fan of prequels and prefer to start at the beginning of a timeline, so I may not watch the new movie for that alone. The production does look good, and I'm sure you can watch it and like it even if you never watched any of the episodes. The movies tend to have their own story lines, so you're not missing much, except maybe some nuances that don't amount to much and only long time fans would get.

Can not believe they killed Spock in the new star trek movie. Guess it would have happened eventually

Just started Season 2 of the original series, I think there are about 50 more episodes of this and then starting The Next Generation, from which I'm told there is an Android that's hilarious.

TOS was campy and created on a budget in the days when these types of shows were not taken seriously. It was not embraced or recognized until long after the series was canceled when it developed a cult following which turned out to be an oasis, quenching the thirsts of sci-fi fanatics.

The vision of Roddenberry was the brilliance of the show (for its time); different races working together, intelligent and peaceful diplomacy to dangerous situations, a united Earth working to broaden its reach in the galaxy, etc. The show itself, not so much. Hah. Some of the episodes are difficult to watch, such as one episode where Kirk acts like a neighing horse and another where hippies take over the Enterprise... damn dirty hippies...

And now the Starship Enterprise Model is proudly displayed at the Smithsonian in D.C. Who would have guessed? I always thought the Enterprise was ugly and not very impressive looking space ship. I thought the Star War's space ships were way cooler, even the Millennum Falcon. Not only is "Millienium Falcon" the coolest name for a space ship in the galaxy, she was also the fastest.

"Galaxy Quest" is a funny spoof on Star Trek, or rather trekkies who are fans of the show. Aliens from another planet get their hands on a couple TV seasons of Star Trek and they think it is recorded history of earth. The Aliens think they are so primitive and earthlings are so advanced. They study the TV show, worship it, emulate their whole world after the TV series, and then visit earth to meet their Masters who by then are old, washed up, and forgotten TV actors who make cameo appearances at comic book festivals in Las Vegas. Thats the first 15 minutes of the movie, so I didn't really give anything away.

Yes! The Enterprise is based on warp theory... warping space to create a sort of bubble outside of space. Weird, but interesting. The Falcon uses ion propulsion which is actually in development, but isn't in the Smithsonian, I guess? Both are an unhealthy obsession of mine. :) and Galaxy Quest is a great flick.
