I do that. Says no network avalable.

I tether some in a remote area where signals are often weak. I get that message when I don't have a cell signal available. Also, if you turn tether on/off/on too quickly, you can get that signal. Not sure why that happens.

Basically, all you have to do is turn on tethering and then from your laptop, choose your phone's wifi as the hotspot.

Check your wifi security settings for your SSID and WEP/WPA settings. I personally turn all of the security settings off for better performance. This only works for me because I usually only tether while in the car (not too likely that someone is going to be following me sniffing my data especially since most of the driving is not on major highways) or out in rural areas where I would be able to see anyone close enough to be getting to my data (for example, this weekend I was out on a remote farm without another house in sight). I have to say that Verizon has been awesome for 3G coverage in the remote areas that I go to. I might not have electricity or running water, but I have 4 bars of 3G! Much better than AT&T or Sprint were for me.

Now with Gingerbread you can also USB tether. They took that out of 2.2 (Verizon may have made Moto do it, who knows..) but it's there with 2.3. Also when you put the phone in PC Mode windows update will install the modem driver and other network drivers, so no need to use the VZAccess software (doesn't Support X, so before this since there was no built in USB tether, you couldn't officially do it).

Step 1. Click 3g Mobile Hotspot Icon
Step 2. Click your settings button
Step 3. Touch Wifi AP mode settings
Step 4. SSID -- This is the name of your WiFi network you are createing. Change it to what you want
Step 5. Security -- I use WPA2
Step 6. Wireless Password -- Must be between 8 and 63 characters long. Remember what you type here.

Edit: Step 6.5 -- Go back to the main 3G Mobile Hotspot screen and activate it by placing a check mark next to 3G Mobile Hotspot.

Step 7. On your PC look for the wireless network name you created in step 4.
Step 8. Type in the password you created in step 6.
Step 9. Surf the web.

Yeah, I would have been fine using USB tether, BUT...I didn't think ahead to get the USB drivers before I left. So even though I was using WiFi tether, I still had to have the USB plugged in to keep the X charged up. WiFi tether can really drain a battery! I wasn't patient enough to D/L the drivers over 3G. First thing I did when I got home...got the USB drivers.
