Still indecisive! HTC One or S4?

The Multi-Window feature does sound really enticing. While the One does have better build quality and design, I don't really mind the S4's look and feel either. However, the S4's button placement is more appropriate than the One's, which might suit me better because I have somewhat small hands. As for the features, I won't really be using the advertised ones as much because I AM an average phone user. I don't mind their screen differences because both's are outstanding, despite miniscule differences. I'm not a heavy user also, so browsing might be the only reason for heavy battery consumption. In terms of the One's audio, will it deliver the same quality when I use its headphones? I'm only gonna use the BoomSound speakers when I exercise in my room or when taking a shower.

And I've heard lots about the camera. Its just hard to pick. What's attracting me to the S4 is its Multi-Window feature (really great feature!), zoom ablility and clarity of its camera (not saying that the One's is bad), customization, and insurance with its easily-repairable build and removable battery. The One's design, audio and call quality, sufficient storage and battery life, camera features, great video recording, and pretty much everything else. I probably left out some things but those are mainly it.

As I've said, I'm just looking for which will be the most convenient, time-efficient with the browser, and handy when it comes to overall camera usage :) thanks for your insight!

And I won't be considering the Note 2. That thing won't fit in my pocket lol. But thank you, though.

I got my HTC One spcefically for the camera however the BoomSound and social integration was a plus. If you typically take pictures in well lit areas the the camera won't be as important to you.
Keep in mind performance wise the S4 is still going to perform better than the S3 or older last year models.

If you take a picture of a page from a book, will you be able to see the text clearly, even when zooming in?

I am an average phone user, so I won't really be trying to become a photographer with either of the two. I'll be using it for views/sceneries (i.e. the beach or even my front yard), with friends, maybe food, and for school (notes on the board, pages from a book, or any other small text). And I'm not sure if I'll be using the camera more on normal light or low light situations, since I rarely took some with the LG Optimus S due to its relatively poor quality. But even so, in well-lit areas, will the One still deliver good quality pictures?

You won't go wrong buying either phone their both great. I simply choose the one because I wanted iPhone5 build quality with an android phone. And I got exactly what I wanted. Boom sound is great the screen looks awesome and I no issue with the non expandable storage or sealed battery. But if you would prefer to switch batteries and adda cheap 64 gig card to your phone pick up the s4. Prior to this I had a note 2 and s3 and I almost never used the spen or multiwindow. The air hover feature is nice but on the whole the extra features were not enough to pull me away from the excellent build of the HTC one. Is the one perfect not by a long shot the button set-up isn't the best( but I've gotten used to it.) The volume rocker and power button are a little too flush for my liking but to me those are small gripes.

For a Student? The S4 HANDS down.

If you like working out with your phone and don't care it lacks many features but just care about great sound, HTC one.

Simple.

If I recall back when I was leaving high school and heading to college, the low-light capabilities and image stabilization of the One would be the killer selling point for me. You never know when you're going to be at a concert, or a party or anything that you'd want a decent low light camera. Halloween parties would not just be a distant memory, I'd have evidence of the crazy stuff drunk girls do. That said, the 4 MP is more than enough to get you through any detailed resolution photo's you'd need of books, the more important feature in that case is the stabilization, so you don't have to hold your breath and try to remain still to get a picture of a detailed book in the potentially poor photographic lighting of a classroom.

I won't talk about multi-window since I haven't tried it, but it sounds rough with an on screen keyboard, where else would you put the rest of your multiple open applications?

Yep, OIS is a great feature for me and I agree 4mp is perfectly sufficient for what most poeple want. Combined with a f2 lens and 8fps shooting capability, that is a great spec.

The split screen thing is not for me - the tab is always there whilst it is on, and I have never used it but I gather it is more useful on the note 2 (I have an S3). The other Samsung apps... oh dear. I turned off all my S3 stuff as it just wasted battery (like smart stay).

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hey, everyone! My contract is close to its expiration, and I was wondering what phone I should get to replace my LG Optimus S. Both the HTC One and GS4 are great phones, and I'd be very complacent to get either one of them since they are a HUGH upgrade from the Optimus S.

However, as a high school student, I was wondering which of them would be much better/more helpful/more convenient for me in the next two years under a new contract. I'll be using my phone more for the camera, music player, more accessible games to pass time, and to help me with certain tasks with the browser or certain apps (searching up things, sparknotes, AP notes, etc.)

HTC Pros: pretty much everything; almost zero lag, audio quality, pretty good (but not great) camera & its features, design, 32 GB memory = more music and pics.
Cons: although overall it is much better than my current phone's and is amongst the top, the HTC's 4 MP camera is kind of what holds me back at times. Also, the no menu button might slightly bother me and the phone is almost irreparable if it breaks.

S4 Pros: better simplicity, better convenience, somewhat better camera than the One's, useful Multi-Window, it looks easier to use, reparable, expandable memory and replaceable battery
Cons: some minor lag issues, 16GB might not be enough (but its more than my Optimus S's 2 GB lol).

Note: those are from what I've heard/seen from reviews.
Anyways, sorry for making this post long! Please help me out with either experiences from these phones or with any info!

Thanks, and sorry if this might be the wrong thread.

I would go HTC because college was a particularly tough time physically on my phone for the first couple of years. Also, you are lucky to have a smartphone in college. I had a Palm Treo my sophomore year and it was SO much better than the not-smartphones I had had before.

In all fairness, I own the one and LOVE it, so it could be something I am biased on, but you will be on WiFi almost all the time on campus, so the battery life will rock your world, the aluminum body will be near indestructible, the TV app works on just about anything with an IR receiver which would be awesome. I think the whole no lag thing is great because you actually feel like you have a brand new phone - instead of one that you've already loaded with background processes.

But really, the decision is yours. It's going to be a huge upgrade either way. Decide and enjoy!

Don't know about the s4 but the WiFi range on this is so much better than any other phone I've had.

Posted my thoughts on XDA:

I had the One since the 18th, liked most everything about it. It was smooth, no stutter or lag, gorgeous phone and awesome screen. I've always been a fan of Samsung (S2, Skyrocket, S3, Note 2). So I've been fighting a little devil in my head to try the S4, devil won and I exchanged the One for the S4 on Saturday. BIG MISTAKE! The S4 is laggy, Wifi signal repeatedly drops, TouchWiz use to be tolerable but now it's just a bloated septic tank of a OS. You could strip the 5% of whats left of Android out of the phone and it would stand on it's own. You expect to see android somewhere and but it's buried. I read another describe it as a 2003 HP computer with all the crap on here, that's pretty accurate. The S4 screen is gorgeous and the camera software is awesome, but the rest of the OS just wreaks. On paper it looks like a phenomenal device, in practice it's anything but. No premium device should lag this bad. I would equate the S4 to having a really hot chick sitting on your face and then ripping ***, totally kills the experience. I've loved their devices in the past and I thought I owed it to myself to try it, but now I'm stuck graveling back to the ATT store manager hoping he lets me do another exchange.

Thank you all! I really appreciate everyone's suggestions, and now I'm leaning more towards the One.
As aforementioned, both the S4 and the One will be huge upgrades from my LG Optimus S, and both will be VERY helpful for leisurely things and also school-wise. The Optimus S lagged too much and it was pretty slow overall (i.e. the Dictionary app, and websites for educational purposes). But yep, I'm largely considering getting the One. And if I have any problems or feel like I'm missing something beneficial that the S4 would give me (like perhaps its Multi-Window), then I can switch. Still, the One is fast enough to help me greatly, along with the S4 despite a few minor lag issues that would still make my Optimus obsolete.

I have a couple of questions for current One users (and I truly am sorry if I have asked too much). Does its stock browser have a forward button? I've seen numerous reviews and when they go to the top of the page or press the menu, I don't see it on there. Also, how is the camera like overall from an amateur/average user's perspective? I've asked that several times, but I just wan't to clarify if it'll do the job ranging from taking a picture of a page of text from a book, to just about anything else in particular.
And since it is summer, there will be some pretty good daylight. So if I go to places, like say the beach, water parks, or any outdoor areas and the lighting is good, will the One's camera still take pretty good shots?

I am too indecisive between those two smartphones. I plan to buy one of them within the next 2 weeks. I have spent hours ready reviews. I have to say users and expert reviews seems to prefer the HTC One, but I am still more leaning toward the S4... I would say it is 60% 40% .

The built quality and almost bug-free system is a good point for the HTC. Also Sense 5 seems more clean, and mature, than Touchwise.

However, I think we can expect more supports from Samsung, since they will sell millions of those. They might be releasing tons of patchs to improve performances. I don't know if that make sense. Anyway!

The camera for me is not a big deciding factor since I don't rely on my smartphone to be my real camera. Regarding 32GB storage there is an GS4 coming soon with 32GB, as to what coming soon is AT&T is about as useful as Verizon in answering that. But if you can wait a bit longer that answer may be . . . well answered. So that is a covered issue plus the expandable memory for music and other content on the microSD card.

Now CyanogenMod and getting rid of everything that HTC has done to the OS has its appeal for me and the hardware is very nice, yet not very repairable as you noted. In my smartphone lifetime I have never had a phone, lost, stolen or damaged (knock on wood) so I am pretty sure I would be ok, but given that I just said that it's like the HTC One would fall and die a horrible death.

I like the additional button on the S4 and the lack of menu button on the One is annoying and we get the HTC Tramp Stamp (Verizon is so proud) on the front.

I will say I think they are on par with each other, you can get rid of blink feed (which is something I would do right off the bat) both have good specs, hardware and OS build. The S4 has extra software features that may or may not be gimmicky as does the One. What it comes down to is going the Apple route and never being able to expand your memory (really wish HTC had not gone this route) or following the Samsung path of expansion but at the loss of internal RAM (until the 32GB comes along).

Ultimately if you had to choose today, I would say get the One 64GB if you feel the One is the One for you, at least with 64GB you will have enough memory to keep you going forward.

Thanks again, everyone. And that's what I'll just do then; compare both phones. My dad's ordering the HTC One and if there's something amiss or bothering me, I'd weigh in the S4 as a resort.

I don't know if you've made a decision yet or not but I moved from an iPhone 4 to the HTC One and I absolutely LOVE it! Don't worry about the camera, it is fantastic especially in low light pictures. The S4 wins in outdoor lighting but since as you're a high school student I imagine you will be out at night with friends or indoors at events and the Ultrapixel camera really shines in those situations. As for gaming you have nothing to worry about. It can breeze through N64/SNES emulators, I've run Asphalt 6, Real Racer 3, downloaded torrents using Atorrent (highly recommended by the way) at nearly 2Mbps over LTE and watched 1080p video without so much as a hiccup from my HTC One. This phone has power and isn't afraid to use it.

Also since you're a bit younger than me I'm sure you're into social networking such as facebook, twitter, etc. The One excels at this with Blink Feed being a great way to keep up with current events as well as what your friends are doing, all without having to go into any apps since it updates quickly by pulling down. The One is very customizable and I have been very impressed with the speed of Sense 5 as well as the options HTC has included. (Camera options, solid stock keyboard, video options, etc)

I really think this would make a great phone for you. I can't recommend it highly enough!

Thanks for your post! Yeah, my dad ordered the HTC One already :)
I just hope to get the same great experience everyone is having with the phone because I'm gonna need whichever's best for the next two years. I'm mostly going to use the phone for the browser, along with a bit of social networking and camera (I'm not much of a heavy user of these as you'd expect), and I've seen on some videos that the S4 performed slightly better. Nonetheless, the difference isn't that great. It just basically comes down to how I feel about the HTC One when I get it. If I'm not feeling it like whenever I use a friend's S3, I'll exchange it for the S4.

I just switched from my HTC One for a few hours and went to run errands. As soon as I got back home, I went straight back to my HTC One, I like it that much. The G4 will be on the shelf as a backup. Nuff said!

I love my HTC one. I think the daytime/outdoor pics do just fine. The sound is great. No lag issues so far. Love blink feed a lot more than I thought I would. I was on the fence forever about switching phones and carriers, but all my research made me feel like I made the right decision. Zoe is also a great fixture. Good luck!

Make sure you check out the new BlackBerry Z10 and Q10 but between those two I would go HTC One.

It sure sounds promising. The One's gonna be shipped on Monday, so hopefully I enjoy it as much as you do!

Sounds really good. Yeah, I've done some pretty extensive research on those two phones, and I'm glad I've made a decision!

Thanks for your suggestions. However, I've kept my choices between the two :)
