In order to help manage the limited space on the OV I try to keep my stock browser pretty clean. I frequently clear out all the settings (history, cookies, etc.) However, it still seems to increase in size over time (3-4 meg) until eventually I clear the data, add back my bookmarks and homepage and get it back to around 100k of user space. What am I missing that is causing this accumulation of data?

its normal. live with it? or try another browser. Dolphin HD is way better than stock.

also, a browser is especially susceptible to collecting a large amount of data, it does cache every website you visit afterall...

Not to mention Dolphin HD (idk if the mini/regular one does this too) allows you to cache to your SD card.

I tried dolphin and noticed that there's an option to clear HTML5 data. When I do that and all the other clear options, it goes right back to its original size. I wonder if that's what's building up in the stock browser that you can't access to delete. I already have skyfire that I use for flash vids. Any opinions on how Skyfire and Dolphin stack up side by side?

I have both. I only use Skyfire for watching flash content on a webpage or Crackle.
Dolphin HD with the free add-on's I've installed is (in my opinion)better than a PC browser.
I used to hate using my phone to give advice on these forums. Not with Dolphin HD.
t has the look of a PC browser with tabs at top of page and URL's .

I've had as many as five pages up and was switching back and forth, copying and pasting with an ease that is superior to any other phone browser. It's not the fastest, just the most functional.
If you want speed you will have to sacrifice functionality.
If you want to check out the add-on's go to market and search Dolphin Add-on's
