Stop contacts from updating

Can someone tell me how to stop gmail syncing my contacts. I notice the arrows popping up in the notification bar far too often and feel its draining my battery.

menu>settings>accounts & sync>google uncheck sync contacts

I still want it to sync contacts every so often. I didn't want to just completely stop it. But i think its all or nothing. Do you think it hurts battery life if it syncs too much
