Welcome to Android Central! Is it draining your battery? Remember, just because an app is open in RAM doesn't mean it's actively working. It may just be cached/paused in RAM. Android doesn't work like Windows -- Android likes to keep RAM relatively full, so that it can switch apps relatively quickly and efficiently.

Or try this... press and hold on the “Google Maps” icon until pop up is displayed and then continue to follow as on SS... or go to Battery options and put "Google Maps" in the desired place under "Background usage limit"
