First the new OTA update popped up with a notice several times a day asking if I wanted to download the new update. I hit reject Everytime. Now its just downloading Every time and I have to pull the battery to stop it. Is there anyway to disable the phone from auto updating?

I believe rooting is the only way to stop OTA updates from eventually being forced.

To me having the update download benefited me more than stopping it. To have a phone that I could used as a phone out-weighed loosing my free MHS.

Rooting worked for me too... but it's not the only reason I had for rooting my phone... getting rid of all the bloatware... finding and updating to new Radio's... and flashing different ROMs, including Gingerbread ROMs... but if you are considering Rooting as an option you should really read: http://forums.androidcentral.com/thunderbolt-rooting-roms-hacks/103522-faq-should-i-root-my-thunderbolt.html

It really does not matter... however, if you root your device you will be back to MR1 radio... then you can install any radio you want.

there is no advantage of rooting after the mr2 ota, however, the process is the same for rooting before or after mr2 ota. also, should you want to root, you should do so before the next ota update as from what i have read, All publicly known temproot exploits are patched in the next ota

it doesn't matter if you root first, or if you wait until after you get mr2 ota, after rooting, you are at stock mr1 rooted.
if you root and want to maintain root, you will have to install a rom, or at least debloat, so that the OTA will not take.

I have to pull up the testing menu and turn it to "LTE mode" in order to get it to stay on 4G, otherwise it tries to go back to 3G. So if I have reduced connectivity, it stands to reason I'll lose the ability to connect to 4G totally at my job.
I actually started paying for my hotspot. The problem is the connectivity after the update. People are reporting reduced connectivity to 4G after the update. The whole reason I want the hotspot is for a night job a work for my computer, and I need 4G speed for things like video via the hotspot. My job is on the VERY fringe of 4G coverage in my town.

Okay so say I want to root. I know I want Gingerbread. However in browsing the internet, I know there are builds of 2.3 that will brick your phone. How can I avoid this? Is there a list of builds out there?

Yes, some are. But far more are reporting noticeably increased connectivity after the MR2 OTA update. I am one of them.

Ultimately it shouldn't matter why I dont want to update. It's my phone, my hardware, and they shouldn't be able to FORCE anything on to that hardware. Could you imagine if your ISP force downloaded something onto your computer? There would be outrage. But because people think of these devices as phones, instead of what they've become, computers with phone capability, verizon can get away with it.
When you start making that argument is when they say alright, your device but our service which we don't have to let you utilize.
