I got the Inspire 2 days after it came out. I havent had many problems except the camera & camcorder sometimes just randomly close down with no warning.....

until yesterday, when all of a sudden it stopped charging, then it turned itself off and i havent been able to turn it back on again. I had it plugged in and the phone got really hot - that was AFTER it wouldnt turn back on.

i have awful phone luck. I originally had a blackberry curve 8330..... lots of bugs & it froze constantly. Replacement one did the same. Blackberry curve 8530 the keyboard stopped working. Replacement one of those froze repeatedly & kept deleting files. Blackberry Torch the touch screen wasnt responsive & it wouldnt accept my SD card, also wouldnt keep my contacts loaded. And now my Inspire has fried itself.

i looooooove this phone! it's fabulous! but of course now i am really hesitant to replace with the same phone because i have had such horrible luck!!

AT&T is sending me a new battery to see if that will work.....but.....??

any ideas what caused this? anything i can do about it? or is a new battery and a possible phone replacement all i can do with it?

Its just that one that's a defective product. The Inspire is a really good phone and HTC is a good brand. The Inspire actually has a feature that automatically stops charging if the battery gets too hot. Thats probably broken.

Hey Luna,

I'm assuming by now you already have this resolved and I'll bet that it was the battery. I'll also bet that you have a two piece charger. What I mean by that is that you have one piece that plugs into the wall and then a usb cord that plugs into the first piece. The transformer can't regulate the charge coming through the wall socket well enough and shorts out cellphone batteries. All of the newer phones like this are doing the same thing. I suggest finding a one piece charger so it doesn't happen again. You can continue using the usb cable with your computer, but don't use it to charge the phone anymore. Also, to touch on your camera force closing. This is generally caused by bad apps. The easiest way to explain it is like this. HTC, AT&T, and Google do not make the apps that are on the market. The apps on the market can be made by anyone. This means I could sit here at my computer and make an app. Just because it works on my computer, or my Android, doesn't mean it will work on yours. In fact, google has already released statements talking about apps that are no good for the phones, that still have not been pulled from the market. The apps that we have seen on the most phones that cause the most damage are as follows. Advanced task killer, Juice defender, Gtunes music, Anti-virus, and Myxer. These are just a few of many. I would venture a guess, without looking at the phones, that you have advanced task killer on your phone. Task killers are unneeded on your phone because there is already a built in task killer that is fully automated on the Androids. You can easily find press releases of Google saying that task killers are not needed and hinder the phones. This is because system process that have to run get closed out by the task killer. This includes things like your camera. I really hope this has helped you.

I'd also like to add something for rocketry. If you don't know what you're talking about, don't speak. There is nothing on the board for any phone that measures temperature and shuts down a phone when it gets too hot. When a phone gets hot it's from one of two things. First would be if it had been wet and corrosion on the board is causing a short, or second, if a battery has taken too much electricity and has shorted. In either case there is no internal thermometer, as it were, to even be able to tell a board to shut down. Phones generally shut off if there's a short because of the buildup of electricity and then subsequent release of that electricity into wrong transistors, overloading the board. THIS WILL RUIN A PHONE! So please do not spread false rumors that will make people think their phones will be ok because "if it gets too hot the phone will shut itself off."

Ok, back to you Luna. While HTC has been very hit or miss over the years I have to say their Androids have been surprisingly good. Please understand from above that I do know what I'm talking about when it comes to cell phones. I have been working on them and with them for over 10 years. I'm actually a technician with a cell phone company. While there are phones that have problems not all phones do. I have personally worked on some of the phones you have mentioned and know what problems they have. I can tell you that while one of your previous phones had a lot of problems, the others did not. If you are continuously having problems with all of your past phones and your current phone, you may have to come to terms that you, like so many others, are a bad phone owner. People treat their phones horribly because they take them around with them all day. People toss their phones around like they're $20 pieces of plastic. I have news for you, they're not. They are advanced pieces of circuitry and technology, and I know you wouldn't throw around a flat panel T.V. Try treating your phones better, and perhaps really pay attention to what you're doing with it. Maybe you're taking your phone into the bathroom while you take a hot shower? You'd be surprised how many people do. The condensation from the steam gets into your phone and causes liquid damage. Another thing I see a lot is people who put there phones in their cup holders in their cars. If you also put drinks in there, you probably have corrosion on your charging port, if it's on the bottom of your phone.

Hope everything has worked out for you, and that this has been educational for you all.

Duces

Duces, I think you might he mistaken. HTC has explicitly stated in the instruction manual and on their website support page for the inspire that the phone will automatically stop charging if the battery gets too hot. It will then resume when it cools. Please reply and I will quote the sites.

To jwah24:

Don't accuse someone of not knowing what they're talking about if you haven't done your homework. This is from the Inspire support page on HTC.com:
My device has gotten warm and appears to have stopped charging. What is happening? close When using the device for prolonged periods of time, such as when you're talking on the phone, charging the battery or browsing the web, the device may become warm.

In most cases, this condition is normal and therefore should not be interpreted as a problem with the device.

The device has a protection feature that if the device becomes too warm (due to use of GPS while charging, BT while charging, using the device as a wireless modem, etc), the auto protection feature will be triggered and the charging process will be stopped.

Once the device cools down, the device will then begin charging again.

Now apologize to rocketry.

You're probably right. Sucks to have a dud.

to OP, just return it back to AT&T and get a new one. It should still be under warranty.

Its through HTC, but AT&T will still exchange it. 12 months worth if there is a technical or hardware issue. its not an insurance issue.

Well, I tried a new battery and it worked for about 5 minutes and it heated up & stopped charging. So I have a totally new phone.

I have not used my 2 piece charger at all, I have a regular 1 piece that I use. And while I do use my phone constantly, I am pretty careful with them.

Of my blackberry experience, the torch wad defective straight from the box. The others, well, personally I just think they were somewhat cheaply made.

The ATT people I talked to said they thought it was a short in the charging port, which would make some sense since it was hottest right around that port. But, no problems with this one and I'm being careful with what apps I put on!

I learned a lot from your post and was wondering about the part that you said that the phone can get ruined by overcharge of electricity, if I worded that correctly? My son has a Galaxy S2 and would use it while it was charging. It had gotten extremely hot and the battery was .... well puffed out. I ordered a new battery and now the phone will not take a charge or turn on but while charging gets really hot still. I am probably asking an obvious answered question but do you think the phone itself is ruined? Or is there something more I can do? Thanks ( jwah24 )

Before my HTC Vivid, I had the Inspire 4g. It worked like a charm in the beginning but maybe 6 months later, it wouldn't hold any charge, would get very hot and freeze up constantly. I loved it in the beginning but hated it in the end. Not quite sure why the Inspire has this reoccurring issue.
