Storage/memory question..128gb or 512gb??

512 Ultra.
512 SD Card.
1 TB MS Storage.
200 GB Google Storage.

I'm like Tim the Tool Man except instead of more power, I want more storage. Must have storage...

I'm with the same setup, minus the Google. Since this is going to be my last device upgrade for a while, I wanted the storage.

Samsung is giving me the runaround with the 512gb model.

Samsung seems to do that with the 512gb models... seems like I've seen this story often and in other past Samsung Forums... S20, Note 10??

They advertise it and they'll maybe have some at launch. But for the rest of the year?? It seems like a small batch run that they seem to do and still not enough keeping people waiting. They need to do a better job of forecasting customer demand and make them instead of what it seems make a few when needed.

I wouldn't know what to do with all that storage. I still have around 300gb left on my 512 Note Ultra

How much storage (I don't know why the industry started calling storage "memory" - granted, it's "chips", but it has the function of a hard drive, not the function of RAM, which is what the computer industry means by "memory") you need is determined by you, not by the phone. If you "absolutely must have" a few hundred apps stored and ready to run, you probably need 512GB of storage - or even more. But if you're the normal user, you can easily get away with 128GB. (I'm a software junkie, I install apps just to test them, and regularly forget [or ignore] to uninstall them. I have 128GB of storage, and I haven't come close to running out. [And no, if you fill "more than half", or "more than ¾, or more than <any percentage you like>, it won't make the phone run slow, or make it lose things or do anything else people who don't know what they're talking about claim.)

If you expect to keep the phone for 5 years or more, I'd go for the 512GB, because you never know what's going to happen. (Some programming language might come along that creates huge apps.) But if, like most people, you're planning on getting rid of the phone in a year or two, 128GB should be fine.

My S10+ has 512GB. I am glad as I use the sd card slot for a dual sim and I am already over 100GB used on my phone. I would be running out with 128GB on board. I stopped using sd cards when I had several corrupt and lose my data. So I use cloud storage and also back up to an ssd external drive regularly. But I am happy to have the larger storage on my phone. I will keep it until it dies and not trade it in, so I won't be losing out in the long run.

Not a fan of local storage I use the cloud for all of my storage which had always worked out well for me.

I still think that the 128gb was a bit of an insult by Samsung, for the price we should all have gotten 512gb or 512gb plus a free 512gb Micro SD card

You must live in a city or very populated area. Out my way unless you have WiFi, you don't have internet so cloud storage isn't an option.

It would easy to use that much storage on a PC but a phone? I wouldn't know what to do either lol.

Hi, depends , for me 128gb was plenty so you might need more storage for your personal preference. Sd card are great for pictures/documents but they can get corrupt and known for that, not to say you can't use them but back up different places in case something does go wrong .

Except the fact that you're not really getting 128GB,how much does the OS get?

Samsung is giving me the runaround with the 512gb model. It was supposed to ship today. I have been away from android for awhile. I initially had the 128gb but returned it to T-Mobile for more memory (obviously). In your guy’s expertise would you go for higher memory or just add an SD card? I thought in the past and correct me if I am wrong SD cards slowed down android phones. Again been awhile since I made the jump back over. Thank you in advance!!

Each one of us are different, you the only person that knows how much storage you need. I have young kids, and I do alot of videos and picture daily. I went ahead and upgrade to 512GB because of it. That was another reason why I left iPhone because of storage.

Thanks for all the feedback! Went with 128gb so far it's more than enough. Nice to see apple music kept my library alive and well, even my personal music which I was shocked to see!! The rest will go in the cloud or on a card if needed.

1 of the reasons i sold my 12/128 S20U was because of the 128 ROM... Now with the 8/512 N20U and im very pleased... Okay not very but more pleased...

My sweet spot is 256 gb, but since I could only choose between the 128 and 512 i picked 512. My music alone would take up half the space on the 128. Although I have 256 sd card, at one point my music wouldn't play from the sd card so the 128 was out. 512 is alot for me, but the plus side ot me is I can bypass using a sd card and just use my internal storage. I'd rather have too much space than too little space or have to worry about my sd card messing up.

It ultimately depends on how much memory you think you need. The 128 /sd card combo may work for you.
wow! I am a music person also, but I don't have that much. How many songs do you have? Or is it the quality setting you have them?

I have a little over 1300 songs and they're only taking up 13 gigs. I am interested if you have a different quality setting I think mine is cbr 200..

I have 5728 songs that come out to 37 gb. I have no idea what the quality setting is. I don't mess with any of that. Lol

:) I have about 200 gb of music, give or take, on my SD card (never a problem playing from the card for many years...). They are not at any unusual quality level--over 20k tracks.

I don't like streaming for any number of reasons, including that I travel a lot and often streaming is difficult if not impossible. So, I think the basic message of this thread is what it has always been--one size does not fit all.

512gb future proofs the phone better in my opinion. Cloud storage for pictures is nice, but Google photos free version limits picture and video sizes.

And if you're using 4k or 8k video, those are very big files and won't go over to Google photos at that resolution.

I've also found that some apps, such as music apps like ProPlayer tend to work better with the music files on the internal and not on a card.

After having lots of memory issues with old Samsung phones in the past, I'm happy to have the 512gb option!
