Straight Talk vs T-Mobile

I am currently on T-Mobile's $30 100min "unlimited" text and data plan.

I am debating a switch to straight talk which will cost what appears to be $15 more a month. ($45)

It is my understanding that I will get better coverage since straight talk uses ATT's network, is the coverage the same as the real plain ATT customer? I will loose LTE but hardly get LTE anywhere with T-Mobile anyway. However....how are the data speeds on straight talk. HSPA/HSPA+ is still really good on T-mobile still, should I expect the same with straighttalk?

What exactly does unlimited data mean on straightalk. On T-Mobile it means 5gb at high speed and the rest at 2g.

As someone that had Straight Talk and went to T-Mobile I can say the customer service is way better on T-Mobile, Straight Talk if you violate any of their terms of service expect to be disconnected or your service speed throttled. Go over their non published data limits speeds are throttled. Watch a YouTube video even once expect a warning call that you violated their TOS. Data speeds are nothing compared to T-Mobile. I am saying this as a customer that was with Straight Talk for over a year don't do it you won't be happy do your research there are other MVNO (Mobile Virtual Network Operators) Some use T-Mobile's network.

It's a bummer when ST throttles. I been warned a few times , it was when I used around 200+ meg in a day. I'm not that much of a data hog with my phone but still use ST because I'm on a version tower with them. You need to consider your daily use of data before switching to ST not so unlimited service

They all suck hind titty compared to Verizon . but for a gsm carrier , I guess the consumer starts to feel like a yoyo trying to find the ultimate plan for the phones for the prepaid method.

Tell me about it I've spent so much time researching ideas. Everything from prepaid cell service to using tablets on data only as a phone to hotspots. There is nothing that can beat T-Mobile's $30 plan even with t-mobiles less that stellar service.

Except T-mobile's service is non-existant in a lot of places I spend time, so they are not a viable option for me. Sprint, Verizon, and AT&T all offer coverage most of the places I go. In pre-paid, I was looking at Net10 or StraightTalk (which seem to be the same thing under the hood.) Maybe I ought to research AT&T's pre-paid plans.

Thank you for all the posts, great useful information. I have been ST user for past 2 years. For the price their coverage is been excellent. My current phone is CDMA and running on Verizon tower. While data speed sucks but I have used my phone to watch YouTube, and other streaming, but have not had any warnings on data usage yet, but that may change since just recently I purchased Nexus 5 and currently waiting on my ST Sim card to arrive. As alternative, my wife is been using MetroPCS (its flat rate unlimited ~$50/month), she is not a power user but its data and speed seem satisfactory without too much delay. Once I get my Sim and test drive the phone, I might switch to Tmobile or MetroPCS if Straighttalk turn out to be suck. On separate note, I would never switch to Verizon, or AT&T because they rob you blind and give cluster F#$%^ with their plans and fees, unless of course my company paying for it.

Aside from all the great points the others made regarding ST throttling and horrible speed even before that I would like to add one other horrible ST issue..
I added a new plan once by purchasing their $45 card.. had receipt in hand and all but it doesn't work. I end up trying to get a human but you can't do that unless phone is reactivated.. so I find a landline, call ST before I'm systematically transferred around for 30 minutes.. several individuals in the Philippines that did NOT know their job or even feign concern.
I eventually have enough and politely ask for a supervisor and the guys say "Sure!" [Click.. ring tone]
And if you call T-Mobile you would likely be talking to an American human that works right down the road at ACTUAL T-MOBILE office, not an outsourced 3rd party that hates you. :)

And don't get me wrong, I don't mind where someone is helping me from as long as they are helping or trying.. But who wouldn't prefer a Company that balances the need for a high profit margin with the wants/needs of their customers while supporting job growth in the US. I would pick T-Mobile every time.
