Strange issue w/ physical keyboard

Hi all,

I've noticed that when I'm typing on the physical keyboard on my D4, if I try to type either a question mark or an explanation point, the last word of that sentence is automatically switched to start with a capital letter. What's happening is that, to type a ! or a ?, I need to tap the shift key first. By hitting the shift key, the system automatically capitalizes the first letter of the word I just typed by showing it as the default replacement word. This means that when I then hit either the ! or the ? symbol, the system inserts the "corrected" word -- ie, the capitalized word.

Oddly, it won't do the same thing with any other symbol that you need to reach with the shift key. So, for example, if I type a word and hit shift, that word will again be capitalized but if I then follow with another symbol like ( the system won't replace the word with the capitalized word and instead will just add the symbol (.

The simple work around is that I just type a space after typing the last word of a sentence and then hit shift and ! or ?, but that's a bit of an annoyance.

Well, anyway, if someone can confirm that things work this way with their D4, I'd very much appreciate it. I assume my D4 isn't suffering a malfunction and that's just the way it is designed to work. More importantly, if someone knows how to stop this from happening, I'd very much appreciate that as well.

Thanks,

Will

Not happening with me;

Settings --> Built-in keyboard --> Auto Caps checked, all others unchecked.

Tried a test with Color Note app, First word of sentence auto capitalized, second word remained lowercase after entering shift key (once) and ! and shift key (once) and ?.

Also repeated test with all Built-in keyboard settings enabled, same result.

I am curious if the behavior is the same with soft keyboard.

Rory,

Thanks for testing. I disabled "auto-replace" and "auto-punctuate" to replicate your settings, and my D4 still does the same thing -- capitalize the first letter of the last word if I follow typing that last word with shift-! or shift-?

I don't have the same problem with the virtual keyboard because I'm using SwiftKey X, and that keyboard lets me hit the ? Key without shifting and the ! Key with a long-press of the ? key. I wonder if the installation of SwiftKey somehow fouls up my physical keyboard.... I'll test that hypothesis later by uninstalling or disabling SwiftKey.

Anyway, thanks again for testing. It doesn't bother me enough to do anything about it (like a warranty service call), but I hope it's not an indication of some larger issue brewing under the surface!! :)

Best,

Will

Ha ha, it is SwiftKey! When I disable SwiftKey, the strange auto-cap'ing the last word problem went away.

So, decisions, decisions. Do I simply live with his odd behavior when using the physical keyboard or do stop using SwiftKey? I think I'll learn to live with it and ping the programmers at SwiftKey to ask them to address this for their next update.

Thanks,

Will
