Streaming Movies/Photos from PC

I've seen some people mention doing this in other threads, but I'm not entirely sure how this works. I'm able to stream media over wifi, but I haven't found a way to do it from outside my network. I'm going on vacation next month and would love to be able to watch some movies from my pc during the long car ride. Any suggestions?
