Streaming video from a portable hard drive

So I'm the sort of person who spends a lot of time riding in cars and I like to watch videos while I do it. I've been trying to find a way to bring my video collection with me and nothing seems to work. I have too many for a SD card and have tried various methods of connecting to portable hard drives with more memory. Every time I try, regardless of hard drive/connection method/app used, my videos stutter constantly. I'm fairly certain my Tab 4 is to blame because I've tried multiple routes and keep getting the same results. I am currently using a WD My Passport hard drive with the WD My Cloud app. My videos are all HD WMV. Any suggestions for fixing this?
