Stuck at M logo after update

Crud... no luck. I'm having the same "stuck at M" issue and clearing cache didn't help.

Odd thing is if I turn the phone off then on again it does this. But if I take the battery out for 15-20 minutes and put it back in it boots just fine.

Ok so I was able to get into the mode with exclamation point.... Tried clearing the cache it said it formatted it ok then rebooted from there... still stuck at M logo.

Tried rebooting several times no changes, so then I went into "exclamation mode" again and selected "run update.zip" or something like that then it gave and error that it couldn't find sdcard/update.zip. Tried rebooting again & still stuck at M logo.

Any idea where I can get update.zip & put it on my SD card by putting my SD card into my card reader & copying it on there manually???

Hear is solution that worked for me with some tech assistance from Verizon..

Power OFF DEVICE...

1. Hold Home Button and press power

2. Screen will show a Android with a triangle with astrick

3. Let Go of Home Button and Power

4. Press Search Button (Far Left Button)

5. A blue menu will show at top of page, scroll to Format Device

6. Select Yes to verify

7. Allow format to complete (Information at bottom of page will go through a few steps)

8. Once Format is complete Blue Menu will show at top again, select Reboot

9. Sometimes phone hangs after rebot and will take a while but if no responce after 5 - 10 minutes, pull the battery and reinsert. (Device usually starts fine after this)

Another thing I figured out is that if you are using the new option under Settings/Privacy that says "Back up my data", this feature can cause a number of issues to keep returning even after a hard reset because if your issue was a setting or a app that caused your issue, when you hard resetthe device this feature will restore all the settings and app back on device after restore that will automatically bring issue back.

This feature is a nice ideal but until you are sure that everything is compatible it may not be wise to enable this feature because it will make issues go away after hard reset but also cause issue to return shortly after because the system will restore the other files that usually caused the original issue.

Here is a list of everything that happens in the "exclamation mode"

1. When it opens there is a message right away that says "E:Can't open /cache/recovery/command"
2. If I push "wipe cache partition" It says
--wiping cache...
Formatting CACHE:...
.Cache wipe complete.
3. If I push apply "sdcard:update.zip" it says
--Install from sdcard...
Finding update package...
.Opening update package...
Verifying update package...
E:failed to open sdcard/update.zip (no such file or directory)
E:signature verification failed
Installation aborted.

3. When I select "reboot system now" I still get stuck at the M logo but can feel it do a little quick vibration like it normally would on the eye screen but still only show the M logo.

Any assistance on how to fix this would be greatly appreciated!

don't load the update.zip again

reset the cache and also format it. do the reboot and you should be fine

My X came up just as I left it before the update but only it is now 2.2

I have had this problem since the first leak, they way you get it to boot is leave the battery out for like 5 minutes, then boot. Works everytime. I will try the procedure listed above and report back. But i gotta wait 5 minutes to boot into recovery mode.

I've had the update running since this morning. My Google Voice was acting funny, so I powered down. When I went to restart I was stuck on the M logo. Thank you, thank you, THANK YOU! for the suggestions on wiping the cache. Oddly, I still can't seem to synchronize my Google Voice inbox.

Guys, did any of you try pulling your SD card and rebooting like I asked? As I said, this very thing happened on the official Moto forums and that seemed to work for a couple people (and it can't hurt your phone) so it's worth a shot.

I tried all tips, including yours ottscay (thanks), and I'm back up. I just reinstalled Google Voice, and everything appears to be running smoothly again.

did the procedure and rebooted, got the same result, did a reboot without the SD card, got the same result. Frustrating!

Does anyone know of a non-root app that will back up your installed apps/data?

I'm tempted to do a complete wipe, but even that didn't fix anything when I did the Froyo leaks so I'm uneasy about doing it now without a safety net.

google backs up your apps so no need to worry about backing them up unless you want to save the app data

finally got it to boot by leaving the battery out, this totally sucks! i am going to take it to a store and get them to replace it. what crap!

Can you guys get to recovery mode?

  1. Power off X
  2. Hold and press Home button and then simultaneously hold and press the Power button until the Moto logo displays.
  3. Let go of the Power button, but continue to press the Home button until you see an exclamation mark.
  4. Release the Home button and press the Search but once.

yeah worked for me

first I hit Home and then power, I tried several times, because dont work every time, but I did it, but if I restart the phone the same thing happen lol

Thank you Cory!!!

I fixed my problem... I was having the "Stuck at M" boot issue, and clearing cache didn't fix it.

I was reading another forum (droidforums.net) and a guy mentioned he removed the update.zip file he still had on his card. I just plugged my X into my PC, deleted that file and a few things like the Superuser.apk/SU files for good measure and BAM! I've shut down and booted back up twice now without issues :D

It didn't work for me man....Looks like I'll be having to deal with Verizon's crappy customer service after all.

Sorry to hear that, this seem to resolve mine... So far no more issues..

HOW MANY USERS ARE DOING A HARD RESET OF DEVICE BEFORE DOING UPDATE BECAUSE I BELIEVE ITS A INCOMPATIBLE 2.1 APP CAUSING ISSUE???

Thank you for this post. I had this guy here at work, since he has no clue about updating phones, update to 2.2 (which for some reason his phone got stuck at the M after it installed which a battery pull fixed). After getting that fixed I did a factory reset for him and that damn M never went away. :o I felt really bad, but kept it cool and found this post. When I did the steps and then powered on the phone I hoped it would work and walla the Red eye popped up(after I took out the battery). Never I have been so happy to see that eye show up. Plus saved me from attempting to explain why I messed up his phone. :o
