is this the latest "official" rom/firmware from verizon? if not, how do I get the latest? every time I do a "update", it says I am on the latest.

Yes, you are currently on the latest Android version(gingerbread). At the moment, there is not an official update. Some users are either soak testers or rooted their device to upgrade from system version ". 859" to ". 890". Look under settings> about phone to find out what is currently on your device. If you decide you want the "unofficial" update, you can find it on rootzwiki or xda. Please read and understand the directions carefully before doing any unofficial updates. Good luck.
