Stumped, Stuck on lock screen

Never seen something like this. My wife's Pixel 2 phone has a secure lock screen using a pattern to unlock.

She's had the same pattern for months and it suddenly tells her last night that the pattern to unlock is incorrect?? We had to factory reset it in recovery as it was the only way to get back into it.

After that we were screwed because it requires the pattern during setup after factory reset but it does allow you an alternative option to sign into your Google account during set up.

That works and she can set up a new pattern during setup but now the new pattern only works occasionally.

I've factory reset via settings menu and recovery several times. Still her new pattern only works occasionally.

Some kind of glitch on 8.1?? Any ideas? We tried other options like a pin code but it works for a few times and then tells her the pin is incorrect eventually.

That's disturbing.:-\ What if she sets up fingerprint unlock? It will still ask for her pattern periodically, but at least it won't be all the time.

I'd contact Google about this. Go to Settings>Help​ and tap the Phone or Chat icon under Contact Us.
