sudden sleep after awakening

I may have changed a setting, but even after system reset (not a hard reset) my N1 goes into sleep mode .5-1 second after I press power to wake it unless I immediately slide/unlock. I hate this. I have ICE (in case of emergency) installed and it's almost useless this way.
Screen time out is set to 30 minutes.
Any advice out there?

this is the way its always been. no setting can change it i'm pretty sure. you could install the app No Lock or similar.

No, that's not normal.
The N1 usually sleeps 3 to 4 seconds after wake unless you slide something.

verbally time it: one thousand 1, one thousand 2...

Somewhere between 3 and 4 it should sleep.
