Support Group for those switching from WebOS (palm pre) to Nexus S 4g

I?m going to make the move Monday. I tried today but my store was unable to complete the transaction. I am very happy to get rid of my P.O.S. palm pre. I love webos but the pre is junk! I have 3 of them on my contract and all 3 have been replaced several times. My daughter?s was replaced 6 times for just about every common problem there is and my phone has died 5 times. The one I have today the ear piece does not work anymore and that?s why they?re letting me do an upgrade 3 months early. They finally gave my daughter a black berry 6 months ago after she had 3 die in less than a month. Im ready for something new! I have never had problems with a cell phone like I did my pre.

I think I'll be making the leap in the morning as well (still on launch day sprint pre.)

I'm a little hesitant because the nexus s hardware is a bit dated at this point (single core, super amoled, not super amoled plus, etc.) I wish it was the Galaxy S II, but I've been putting this off over and over waiting for a better phone, doesn't seem like one is coming to sprint anytime soon. Maybe the EVO 3D but it looks pretty bulky and is said to still be running froyo...

Was referring to the EVO 3D, not the original EVO. But speaking of the original EVO, there are already leaked gingerbread builds for it.

Even if it gets gingerbread, updates will be slow and it will be riddled with a bunch of crapware. I'd be happy to root and put a custom rom etc if the hardware was worth it, but I'm not so sure I want to deal with the bulk and the build quality remains to be seen...

The original EVO isn't unique to not having an official gingerbread release yet. Although I'm currently running CM7 on my EVO with a build that is actually gingerbread 2.3.4. I still want to get the Nexus but I have to say that my original launch day EVO is built like a tank (hardware-wise in terms of quality, it's the best phone I've owned). I don't use screen protectors, cases or anything and it is in great condition with no scratches at all. That says alot for a device where one side is just a huge sheet of glass. My pre prior to that was a completely different story, I went though 4 of them in a year, and that wasn't because I was being picky, it was for hardware failures.

Given my experience with the EVO, the one concern I do have with the Nexus is hardware quality. The EVO 3D I'd expect to be similar build quality to the original EVO. That has been the one "struggle" I've had deciding between the Nexus and the EVO 3D. But I've decided on the Nexus for my next phone.

Well, I got my Nexus S.

Its definitely not as efficient to do...well...anything as compared to the WebOS. On the other hand, the device is so much faster. The screen is redonculous.

I am not getting 4g in my neighborhood, which seems crazy since I checked the coverage map. Also the wifi radio seems crappy, It doesn't even work from the next room as the router.

So far I am a bit underwhelmed.

A quick f- you to HP/Palm for stringing us original Pre owners up by our USB cables with the falsehood of "Making things right" and "Coming Soon" I honestly love WebOS as a OS and I hate leaving it but I shall not be passing up the Nexus 4G.

If HP gets some act right about themselves and gets passed the blemish known as the Veer and releases something awesome on Sprint I would definitely come back. But until then the Nexus seems to be a great upgrade from the Pre!

Finally got mine today. Also my sons. I am not disappointed in this phone at all. It has on it what I want to put on it and not all the bloatware that the Pre had on it. It is so fast and the screen is awesome. It will be a pleasure to use this phone for a long time, I hope.

I am another Pre- 2.1 user who jumped ship yesterday. It was time and I don't regret it for a millisecond.

I have used iOS and can't live with it as my primary (still have an iPod Touch for access to apps), but the Gingerbread OS is phenomenal.

FWIW, I actually created a Gingerbread developer environment (virtual device) to stomp around in it before I bought the Nexus S 4G. That helped quiet my nervousness about leaving WebOS.

I have the same observations about the radios/antennas. I have another 4G device on Sprint (MiFi) and it doesn't lock 4G much better so that isn't a huge concern. Yet.

The WiFi -is- pretty bad compared to other devices I have. I'm actually thinking about leaving it switched off.

I think Gingerbread is efficient enough. The fact that I'm not waiting 10 seconds for my typed characters to render is more efficient. The fact that I'm not poking the screen manically, hoping that the device awakens from its ill-timed and inexplicable lockup makes it more efficient. Not having these and countless other issues makes just about anything more efficient than my experience with WebOS.

Notifications were a big worry for me moving from WebOS. I'm happy to report that the "windowshade" notifications are at least as usable as the WebOS notification system. It's possibly even better since it doesn't cut down the screen when you get lots of them. That was disruptive at times in WebOS.

The EVO had a very similar issue upon release and was corrected via a software update. I'm thinking the same will be true of the NS4G.

By the way, from a previous WebOS user to an Android user for about a year... task switching, which on the pre we had cards we moved around to switch... on Android, a little tip, hold down the home button for a second or two and you can see your last 8 recently used apps and switch between them.

I picked mine up yesterday too!! VERY happy with it so far, definitely taking some getting used to, but I think it'll work just fine for me. We'll see what HP/Palm comes out with, but at this point, between the speed, apps, screen, etc... I may very well hang on to this phone for a while.
