When you say Google "L" keyboard what does the L mean?

Lollipop... the Google Keyboard got a major overhaul with the release of 5.0. When the 5.0 Preview builds dropped, someone snatched the apk and reshared it as the L Keyboard and it kind of stuck.

Is that just the one you get from play Store now?

Well, it's been updated a few times since, I think they relased the version that came with 6.0 to all. Calling it the 'L Keyboard' is mostly an anachronism at this point.

I mean I've used the lollipop keyboard is nice and is pretty fast, but once you use the neural keyboard that new keyboard from SwiftKey, I do feel that I can type faster with that keyboard.

I'm trying out Neural.... I like it so far, but I'm still adjusting to it.. I wish I could import my Google dictionary into it. It still feels a bit on the clunky side though. It does do some things that GK doesn't:

1) NUMBER ROW!!!!!!! I have a 6" screen, I can afford to lose the real estate to a dedicated row.

2) The one thing that GK really needs to work on, though, is WHEN it gives predictions. With Swiftkey, tap or gesture typing, it'll give you next work predictions as soon as you end your word (and it auto-corrects, etc). So if I type 'This', SK pops up "is.... was... " etc. But with the GK, it always wants to double check your work... and I get "Thus... " etc. If I click on 'This' up top, it starts predicting again.

Hmm... just realized that I can hit space bar to get GK to start predicting things. You learn something everyday....

3) I prefer how SK deletes whole words... long press delete and it blows away the previous word and pauses before deleting another. If you long press in GK, that sucked will go hell bent for glory and start deleting everything with the quickness.

Of course, on the flip side, I prefer the cleaner interface of GK. I've always found Swiftkey to be fussy and crowded and the colors are a bit wonky (Neural lacks the themes that the regular SK has). Of course, the good SK themes are IAPs.... oh well.

I'll stick to Neural for the time being, but I'm not 100% sold on it yet.

Good analysis. I'm in same boat. I can type much faster on the Neural keyboard, maybe even faster than regular SK.

I do like the simplicity of the GK but coming from Samsung one recently and SK forever, the letters are far up the screen and I find myself reaching for them and missing them as I type. I also see after I stop typing there will be a big string of letters that GK doesn't fix, SK Neural just almost reads your mind or figures out what you meant to type and fixes it. Quite amazing so far. I assume they'll add more themes once out of beta, the 2 themes in there now are in regular SK too.

For me, SwiftKey is still the best for one main reason: I write in two languages (French and English) and I don't need to tell SwiftKey which language I'm using - it just figures it out, to the extent that I can easily write a sentence with both languages.

That's actually my problem with Swiftkey. It isn't good at Chinese and doesn't have swipe for it while Google does. So I end up using Google pinyin input along side Swiftkey. And Swiftkey doesn't have the "hold space bar to switch keyboard feature"which makes it much easier to just use Google.

Also I like that Google displays more corrective options, although I will admit Swiftkey has more accurate predictions and tracks our swiping habits .

SwiftKey keyboard is the best in my opinion. Been using it for years now. Never needed to change to any other keyboard.

SwiftKey is my favorite also! Very easy to use, great word predictions, and those nice directional arrow keys at the bottom.

I'll tell you why I like SwiftKey the best.. The reason is VERY simple, and I'd dump SwiftKey for the Google keyboard if Google changed theirs to do the same:

The ability to capitalize or all-caps a word after you've typed it, by hitting the shift key once or twice. This is such a handy thing, that I've tried so many other keyboards and eventually went back to SwiftKey each time because they couldn't perform that one simple feat.

Wow, thanks. I did not know that.
