Swiftkey phone vs tablet?

Been happily using Swiftkey on my GS3 for the last few months and I want to install it on my Nexus 7.

When I run it, I get a warning that I should get the tablet version. Yet the comments I've seen from this forum suggest the phone version is better without a clear indication why.

What's the deal?

SwiftKey for tablets has a different landscape keyboard that is split to make it easier to type on. There could be other differences but I think that is the major one.

I put it on and like djs71a mentions, it's a little more difficult to use in landscape mode, but works great in portrait mode. didn't think the prediction model would work so well, but @.25, I had to give it a whirl, and boy was I amazed. I might just plunk down the extra for the tablet version.

If I already have SwiftKey 3 on my Nexus 7, will buying n installing SK3 Tablet simply take over for my current SK3 app (meaning all my data n predictions will be the same and i won't have to start over...)?

One difference I know of is that SwiftKey 3 for phones currently has arrow keys, whereas the tablet version doesn't. However, according to SwiftKey, this feature is in the planning stages for an upcoming version. They're trying to figure out the best placement on the keyboard for these keys.

They have a pretty good website. Lots of information is here: http://support.swiftkey.net

This will probably answer your question. In short, the answer is yes, but read it for yourself to see if you interpret it as I did.

The tablet version does have arrow keys, it just takes a few more steps to get to them.

Are you talking about the app SwiftKey 3 Tablet? In that specific version I see no option for arrows. Further, SwiftKey acknowledges that it's not implemented in this version.

I'd love to be wrong about this. What are the specific steps I need to make?

What do you need arrows for... Just use your finger to pinpoint a spot lol

Yup I'm talking about swift key 3 tablet. Hit the number key then hit the {&= key and you will see the arrows.

I installed the phone version on my CM9 TouchPad, and it works good enough for me...and I use my tablet in landscape as much as possible.

Will upgrading SwiftKey lose my personal/learned language data?

That article talks about upgrading from the trial to the full version, not going from the phone version to the tablet version. I had been using Swiftkey on my phone for a while and when I bought and installed the tablet version, all my predictions did not get loaded on my tablet. It took a while for it to "relearn" how I type.

Well...yes, technically you are correct! Actually, I knew this but forgot about it. So thanks for the reminder. I appreciate it!

However, I was talking about the arrow keys as part of the standard keyboard layout. That's what SwiftKey has promised as part of a future release for the tablet.

Do you think that arrow keys as part of the standard keyboard layout would be helpful, or use up valuable screen space?

Depends on if you like to type in landscape mode. Since I never do, I just use the phone one. At the time I bought it, SK3 for tablets was like $4 and the regular one was on sale for $1

You may very well be correct! I read it again, and it does indeed reference upgrading from beta or trial versions. But they do state: "We now store language data in the Android data folder on your SD card. On installing SwiftKey, any old learned data in your ?swiftkey? folder is inherited." That's assuming you haven't deleted the old SwiftKey version first. I would think that both the phone and tablet version use and inherit the same data folder, so it shouldn't matter if it's an upgrade or a different version.

But please clarify something you wrote. The way I understood it (and maybe I read it wrong; if so, I apologize), you said you had SwiftKey on your phone, but then when you put the tablet version on your tablet, nothing transferred. If this is true, then you weren't upgrading, but instead installing a new app on a different piece of hardware. In this case, there would be no existing language data folder already in existence on your tablet from which SkiftKey could draw any history, and so it would have to learn everything from scratch. If you really meant that you upgraded on the same device, then did you uninstall the old version before installing the new version?

Your best bet might be sending SwiftKey support a quick email. Let us know what you find out.

Well, I don't know if I need arrow keys; I was just stating they weren't available in the same way as on the phone version.

However, maybe it would offer more precise control when you simply want to go back or forward one or two spaces or lines. Maybe that would be faster than plunking a thick finger on some tiny text and then, if the plunk missed, dragging the cursor to the exact location needed. Or maybe it wouldn't be faster. But I have read comments of people that really like the arrow keys, so I suppose it depends on the individual. Anyway, glad I made you laugh.

In my experience , in many apps the swiftkey tablet version don't offer the prediction words at the top of the keyboard for us to choose so I was not satisfied it's use.I never tried the phone version of it.But the prediction is the best thing about swiftkey.

The Nexus7 tells them "I'm a tablet!" but SwiftKey 3 is fine on a 7" screen IMHO.
