Switching from IPhone 6+ to Note 8

There's absolutely no reason why Google shouldn't fully implement this into a future OS update/ Google messenger update.

Fully implement what? A messaging experience like iMessage for all of Android? If "there's absolutely no reason", don't you think Google would have done it? It's just not that simple because of Androids openness. So many of the reasons we love Android are also it's biggest challenges. You can't dislike Apple's closed ecosystem and also want to have the benefits of a closed ecosystem. It just doesn't work that way.

Edit:. I will just add that Google is working with carriers to create an iMessage like experience across all platforms. It's called RCS or Rich Communication Services. You can Google it to read more. It sounds like it just takes time to implement because of all the parties involved.

I moved from a 6S+ to Note 8 and have been very happy with it, but you need to understand what you are giving up. My family all uses iPhones and it is a bit of a pain for them to adjust.

iMessage is the real problem. It is proprietary and a great messaging platform as long as everything is Apple. If one person in a group message doesn't have Apple, then they all drop back to MMS which will mean that any picture or video will be pretty much unusable. Its that for everyone involved, not just the Android guy. In my families case, we are using GroupMe for group messages now. I don't really care about other folks as usually they are just texts. If my wife had Facebook, we'd probably just use FB Messenger.

We have switched to Spotify for music... no problem there.

For pictures, we are using Google Photos, which everyone already had. But its no where near as easy for the iPhone user to use as Apple Photos. Again, a pain for them... not so much for you.

If you use other things like Find my friends and such... there are alternatives, but everyone with the iPhones will need to do extra work to accommodate you.

I really don't understand the problems and issues between iMessage and Android messaging apps. I am the only person in a family of 14 iPhone users and I can send and receive group texts with no problem. Seriously, what am I missing by using my Android messaging app?

The issue usually arises when someone switches from iPhone to android. If a group message is started with everyone in the group using iMessage and then one person leaves and switches to an android phone, that person will more than likely miss out on most or all of the group messages. The old group message would have to be deleted by everyone in the entire group and a new group message would need to be started. I have switched a few times and as long as I follow those rules, I don’t have any issues either.

Ok, a few questions.....say I decide to make the switch to the Note 8...I download android messages, if I get included in a group chat with everyone when everyone else uses iPhones, will it stay a group chat? Or will I just get single texts messages from everyone when they respond? Hope that makes sense.... also same question above but what if I start the group message with all iPhone users??

Next, photos and videos, will they all still work and can I send and receive photos and videos just fine between my wife since she is an iPhone user? Hope that makes sense!

I am just scratching my head really at how iMessage is a big problem. But I guess that's the US. iMessage never really caught on in my country as everybody was already using Viber/Facebook. So moving across devices was never an issue because most people just didn't bother moving to iMessage, especially with the benefit that those apps work cross platform.

That bit I think depends on where you saved it. If it's Apple Wallet or Keychain, perhaps not. I would look into transferring passwords to something crossplatform like LastPass or KeepPass, just in case you decide to switch brands in Android in the future, or even back to iOS.

No. None of my passwords were transferred over that were in the Apple keychain or safari. If they did that could be an exploit.

Sorry. I didn't see your reply sooner. As was already stated, as long as you reply with MMS you will stay in the group.

Videos between you and your wife's iPhone will be compressed if sent through MMS. You are better off sharing through Google photos. It sucks and is probably one of my biggest issues with being the only Android user in the family.

Thank you all for the input. Downloading google photos as we speak to see how it works and if it will like we want it too! Is there anything else I need to have in place if I deceide to switch to the Note 8!!

Do you mean passwords for apps or online? I use chrome on both iOS and android so it saves them there. I usually have to reset app passwords up on android. iOS saves them for me so when I get another iPhone they will be there.

The other option is to use a password app. I should use one but have not.

I use F-Secure Password banger on every platform and device. I also use Samsung biometric to login to sites. Chrome has the ability to act as your keychain too.

If I downloaded this app on my iPhone, can I carry over my passwords to the Note 8 by downloading the app on there and logging into my account??

FSecure let's you connect devices and keeps them synced in the background.

I'm sure others have other methods, but after decade with KeePass I've been using this one for 5 years.

I’m sorry, for some reason your personal message didn’t come through. With the password apps you can save as many passwords as you would like on them and most are cross platform so you just down load the app on any phone. I’ve used 1Password and LastPass. Both are good apps. I’m sure there are others that are good as well.

I hope to be making this same switch very soon. I know I will miss imessage, really wish google would create a similar service. While at work (Gulf of Mexico) I have to use wifi calling in order to send and receive text messages, imessage has been flawless in this respect. I hope the standard messaging app with wifi calling will be suffecient.

As has been noted previously IMessage is the real problem. A hit or miss proposition. Sometimes you receive an IPhone text, sometimes not.
