Synchronization: OUTLOOK

I just got my GS3 from UK.

I have worked with SamsungS, BlackberrIES, and iPhoneS.

Can anyone please help me with these two questions:

I bought an iPhone 4S for my wife from UK. I am unable to setup Face Time. After talking to Apple advanced support (very expensive), the issue is about logging onto the FaceTime servers in the US with international Firmware (handshake and encryption issue).

1. Does anyone know of any issues with an international GS3 on US servers?

My biggest (and the most Important requirement) is to sync all my data with Microsoft Outlook (PST file). I am constantly updating Contacts, Calendar, Notes, Tasks, (everything). Outlook PST file is the most used file (3-5 times a day) on my laptop. Blackberry Desktop Sync with Outlook (if anyone has done it), seems to work best because it not only informs me what data is changed, but also asks me to select the data to keep on both (phone and Outlook) if the data has changed, essentially allowing me to undo any accidental change that may have occurred on my device (I don't have that luxury on the iPhone).

2. Does anyone know if GS3 does any of this? Are there any issues with that?

First of all, this IS an Android forum, so your first question is moot. You're asking about an ios app (facetime) that's not an app on the S3.

As for your second question, I have no clue. I use google for everything. Syncs up very nicely with my S3.

My question was: similiar to my iPhone problem with FaceTime (as I discovered it after I used the phone), are there any similar issues (not FaceTime since it is ONLY on an Apple device), with any Android applications that I will have to to sacrifice if I use an international phone in the US?

If you don't use Outlook to sync, then your answer is moot.

Hello, welcome to the forums.

My international S3 syncs beautifully with my outlook account. When I add any on either my phone or computer, it updates on the other device almost instantly.

With regards to working in the US, there should be no problems using all S3 functions anywhere in the world.

As far as syncing the S3 with Outlook I have never had any luck with using gmail calendar as it doesn't compare Outlook entries with its own calendar entries and you end up with hundreds of copies of the same date..

Somewhere on this forum another person figured out you can successfully sync Outlook with Samsung Kies. I have in fact done this successfully. Then you can use gmail calendar to sync multiple android devices to one another. If you do a search for Outlook with Kies I am sure you can find it. I don't have it at hand.

Don't have my S3 yet - should be here next week. Presently using a Moto Atrix 4G and CompanionLink/DejaOffice to sync with Outlook. A colleague of mine has had good results with Mobisynapse to sync with Outlook. A good resource for Android/Outlook sync is Sync Android/Droid with Outlook/Exchange.

I'm sure there are ways to get it to work with Outlook. But there's another option to consider:

I used to use Outlook constantly as well, like you: Email, contacts, Calendars, Notes, tasks etc. About a year ago I switched it all to Google. Sure, there was a learning curve and it took me a bit of time to get used to a new way of doing things, but I would never even think of going back. Everything syncs to/from my phone completely seamlessly. I never have to worry about backing up PSTs since all the data lives on Google's servers. I can access my info from any internet-connected computer. I don't have to constantly download Outlook security updates from Windows update.

Computer-based software is being replaced by cloud services; gradually, but inevitably. I figured I'm going to have to switch eventually, so I did and everything runs very smoothly now.

You can set it up to sync with outlook. But you have to do it manually, as in you need to know the server name and domain rather than just : email, password, ready to go.

I use gmail in Outlook and Google Calendar Sync on my desktop and laptop to keep my calendar up to date. I still keep some Outlook PST folders on my desktop computer but only use them for off line archive.

I understand that Samsung Kies might sync my contacts with gmail but I have not gotten around to trying that yet.

I think it is my error in explaining. My Bold is one line, and iPhone is another phone line.

All my e-mail data Hotmail, GMail, IMAP, Exchange Server, is on both phones; so, it's all live.

All my other data: Contacts, Calendar, Tasks, and Notes is in my Outlook (PST) file. When I sync both phones every night, contacts, Calendar, Tasks, and Notes, gets synched (Phones to PST File then PST file to Phones). This way no matter which phone I am browsing, the data is the same. This can only happen if I can Sync the phone to my Outlook file.

No contacts, calendar, tasks, notes, are anywhere else (Gmail, hotmail, etc). everything is saved locally on my PC (reducing likelihood of security breaches or virus problems)

Can anyone tell me if there are any problems with Kies synching with Outlook 2010?

I was mislead by the way you wrote your question. It looked like you were asking about your facetime issues on your iphone. Based on your answer, I re-read your question and I now get it.

Here is what I have found in the past 1 1/2 days of using the Galaxy S III.

I downloaded and setup Kies 2. It works with synchronizing with Outlook 2003. My contacts and calendar came over just fine. there is no notes app on android (although the Kies tutorial has a Memo app sync with Outlook's Notes and To Do with Outlook's Tasks). I don't see a Memo or a To Do app in my droid.

I am using a 16GB MicroSD card (Kingston) in my droid. But, it shows up as a 1GB card (while 16GB was usable in my Bold). I can't seem to use this as a removable drive (which would be great since all documents, music, pictures, videos are now saved here).

svmtoo, I have had much the same concern as I'm currently using a BlackBerry Torch 9860 with Outlook 2010 on my desktop. I'd like to switch to a Galaxy S3 but first I need to be sure my PIM needs will be met.

You've confirmed what I'd expected - Android has no native To-Do (Task) or Notes app.

My current thought is to use Pocket Informant on the Galaxy, synced directly to Outlook on my desktop. A public beta of their new version starts this weekend, and I've been told it adds direct Outlook sync and Contacts sync to what they already had - Calendar sync and Tasks sync. I haven't figured out a solution for Outlook Notes sync yet. The Pocket Informant web site is at Welcome to WebIS.net - Home.

If you decide to try it I'd be interested in your reactions. I won't be trying it until after the public beta is over.

Just as an FYI, I use Pocket Informant on my Berry currently, set up to sync Outlook <> native Berry PIM <> Pocket Informant on Berry. My logic is that there are a number of 3rd party apps that use the native Contact, Task and Calendar app on my Berry so this structure keeps that data available to them. Not sure how that will work in the Android world.

It's true Android doesn't have these things, but the Galaxy S3 does. Your calendar app has a tasks section. You should also have an S-Memo App installed.

It has been a little more than a week. With my hectic (consulting/running all over NJ/NY) work schedule, I haven't had any downtime to properly research (yet).

Kies v2 Works (more/less). I have synchronized my Contacts (although there are some issues with the field mapping between Outlook Addressbook and the Android's Phone Addressbook). The phonenumbers are working; but the address fields are skewed up making them hard to use for mapping in the Navigation application. I am working to resolve this in addition to opening a case with Samsung. Depending which Samsung tech picks up the phone, the Phone is only supposed to sync with your Google Cloud Account (which obviously isn't so since they have launched Kies v2). I would recommend you work with a copy of your PST file as I do with mine. In the event of a mishap, you can just revert to your working copy. This may be due to me synchronizing with my iPhone and my Blackberry before this. Outlook isn't gracious to anyone else writing to it's books; especially Apple.

Calendar is works fine. Tasks is part of your calendar application on your phone (as Kjnangre mentioned) and the sync is quite nice.

I have tried over 20 apps to sync my Outlook files on my phones. None of them have helped much; instead may have destroyed my PST file over time. If you feel it works for you, that's great. I now only buy phones which fit all my needs.

Kjangre:
I am using SMemo and it is quite nice; but it does not work link up to my Outlook's Memo/Notes (potato/potato). Try using AudioNoteLite (iPhone App) it is actually better than the Outlook Notes.

Overall, I am very happy with my S3. It's volume isn't as clear and as loud (more importantly) as my Blackberry Bold. The Blackberry Desktop is so much more reliable and efficient to sync with Outlook. Nothing to this day has worked better with Outlook.

Samsung's keys are smaller than that of Blackberry or Apple (you'll need a few days to get used to it).

Just a thought:

Some people are mentioning servers. That pertains to Exhange Server. That is not what I was asking. My Outlook is my Contacts, Appointments, To Do List, Notes. None of it is on any server. It is a standalone PST file.

I have used GSyncit for several years now. I use it to sync my Outlook calendar & notes (tasks too if you want). Worth the reasonable $.

I was very happy with the Galaxy S3, until I tried to sync my Outlook calendar. Heads-up for Outlook users: While contacts sync ok, Samsung support has confirmed that its Kies software does not work with the Galaxy S3 when it come to the calendar. They suggest an 18-step export as a work-around

The easiest way to export the calendar from outlook is to import into gmail account used by the device and from there it will appear on the device.

Export from Outlook
1. Open Outlook
2. Click File menu
3. Click Import and Export
4. Click Export to a file
5. Click Comma Separated Values (DOS)
6. You may be required to install the possible translator here. Just follow the directions on the screen.
7. Select folder to export from: Calendar
8. Browse, name, and save the file some place easy to find it. (Desktop)
9. Click Next
10. On the follow actions will be performed screen click the Finish button.
11. Allow the export to perform
Import into Google Calendar
1. Open Google Calendar
2. Click the small arrow in the upper right corner of the “Other calendars” box that is on the left side of your calendar page.

3. Click the Import Calendar link under Calendar settings
4. Click the Browse button and select your exported file
5. Choose your calendar
6. Click Import and wait. It may take a bit.
7. You will be notified when the process is completed.

That works. But, that defeats the purpose of Synchronizing. It would meant that I can only update my Outlook and each time, I have to export/import.

Ideally, I want to update either (Outlook or Galaxy) and synchronize to update.

When I sync, All the contacts from the phone are copied to Outlook each time. And, as a result:
1. Outlook has multiple entries for each contact.
2. Address fields are completely skewed up.

I am sure there is a way. My Calendar, and Tasks are coming over properly. Contacts are still unable to sync.

HAH! Finally got some time to resolve the issue.

I have been messing around with this for the past couple of days (Google wasn't much help). Mine is a bit complicated since I have multiple Outlook profiles (Outlook, Business, Personal, Backup, Archive) and each is linked to a distinct PST file.

I may have finally resolved the inconsistencies in sync. Here are the steps (once the mobile is attached to Kies):

1. Run Kies
2. Attach the phone (Kies should successfully detect it). If it does not, the mobile is not properly attached to Kies).
3. On the Sync tab (in Kies) ensure that 'Selected Contacts Folder', 'Selected Schedule Folder', and 'Selected To Do Folder' options are enabled and pointing to the appropriate locations. You should enable the same for your video, movies, pictures as well. Apparently, leaving options up to Samsung just doesn't work.
4. For the first time, reset the sync history. This may cause some duplications.

Once the first sync completes, you should not have any trouble unless any settings are changed on the phone, Kies, or (more importantly) Outlook.
