Syncing contacts to 2016 Subaru Outback from Galaxy S8

I've tried connecting my S8 to the Outback several times. Each time, the Outback says failed to sync contacts and history. I'm not sure what to do next.
I've tried the following:

1) I have tried to remove and re-add my device a few times and always receive the same results.

2) In my Bluetooth settings, Contacts sharing is enabled for the settings on my Outback.

3) I tried my wife's LG ThinQ v35 and it works fine. All contacts and history sync.

I tried following this thread to fix, but I'm guessing these options changed with Android 9. I don't see the specific group "Contacts with phone numbers" that is mentioned in the solution comment: https://forums.androidcentral.com/ask-question/780317-syncing-contacts-2017-subaru-forester.html

I have same issue. Both my s8 and s9 stopped synching contacts about 2 years ago. I went back to my s7 to test and it also now fails. Got a replacement s9note and tried again. Also fails. SMS texts, history (with no contact information) and audio all work fine. I have played with every conceivable setting on the car and the phones, including developer options for Bluetooth on the phones all with no luck. Pretty frustrating and annoying I can't even manually add some of my frequent contacts to the subí address book.

Just to be sure -- as the OP mentioned, you've already checked the Contact Sharing option in the phone's Bluetooth settings for the car?
