Syncing phone contacts only with google account contacts?

I have one set of contacts in my phonebook on my S3, about 15, and another set of contacts with my gmail account, about 100. I don't want all 100 of my gmail contacts on my phone, but when I sync my contacts on my phone, that's what I get. Is there a way to have a separate group of just phone contacts on google somehow, like my 15 contacts I want in my phonebook, and then just sync those contacts to google for backup storage as they change? I'm not seeing it if there is, it seems like my gmail contacts and phonebook contacts have to be the same ones for the syncing to work.

I tried using the contact "group" thing once, made a contact group that was only my phone contacts, and then put all the contacts on my phone in that group. But when I synced my contacts with my google account, I got all my gmail contents on my phone again. Bummer. I might have had an idea there, but didn't see how to make the sync itself only sync that group, so it didn't work.

Is there a way to do what I'd like to do? Hopefully there is, and there's just something simple that I'm missing here.

Thanks.

I don't know off a way to only sync certain contacts from Google, however there is a way to only show contacts with phone numbers on your phone.

Go into your contacts, go to settings, check the box that indicates "only contacts with phones". This weeds out all the contacts with only email addresses.

Go contacts has a similar option.

Hey, thanks, "settings" for the contacts app was scrolled off the bottom of the menu, so I didn't see that one last thing. Be nice if there was an indicator that there was more that you weren't seeing on a menu, like a small down arrowhead that appears when you're not at the bottom of the list. Too easy, I guess.

That solved my problem, now I can sync contacts with google and only see my phone contacts. I guess that the other contacts that I'm storing are simply incidental *smile*...too bad they have to be taking up storage on my phone, but it could be worse. I found that I can also save them by exporting them to a file and saving that on my computer as the final fallback.

Or you can sync your Google contacts but only display your phone contacts - in the Contacts app, press the Menu button, choose "Contacts to display", then choose "Phone".

I do remember that when I created contacts on my phone I was given the choice of "Phone" or "Google", that must have been the time that I would have had to designate that...is there a way after the fact to turn a "google contact" into a "phone contact"? I don't see that...when I add a contact on my phone, I make it a phone contact, but I've been playing around with syncing, so the contacts that I'd like to be "phone contacts" have become "google contacts"...is there some way to just change the ones that I want on my phone (and on google as well, so that I can sync them) back to "phone contacts"?

In the Contacts app, press the Menu button and select "Import/Export", then select "Export to SD card" (assuming that you have one of course).
Once you're done, exit the Contacts app and use your favorite file manager to verify that the file got created (in the root directory of the SDCard - 00001.vcf). Then go into the Application Manager, find the Contacts app and clear cache and clear data.
Now restart the Contacts app, and import that file, this time specifying the phone as the destination.

Seems daft that you can't just go into each contact and switch it from Google to phone or vice-versa.

Bit late to the thread, but I was wondering if you might have some insight on a problem similar to this.

I have been helping my dad set up his new S4 which is an upgrade from his previous dumb phone. The store copied over all of his contacts just fine, and when I got him set up with his gmail account, all those contacts went in as well. Problem is he does not want all of his gmail numbers in the phone since there are a lot of people without numbers as well as businesses and friends of my mom he doesn't care to have on the phone.

I have tried multiple times to go into the 'Contacts to display' setting and only allow contacts on the 'device' to show, but it always changes back to 'All contacts'. Is there a way to make the 'device' the only contacts to show up? I've already disabled the sync contacts in the phone's settings, but it results the same.

Thanks for any help!
