MetroPCS confirms they're talking to T-Mobile about merging

Following a flurry of rumors, MetroPCS has come right out and confirmed that yes, they're talking with Deutsche Telekom about merging with T-Mobile USA, but nothing definitive has been reached. Here's their brief statement.

"MetroPCS today confirmed that it is in discussions with Deutsche Telekom regarding an agreement to combine T-Mobile USA and MetroPCS. There can be no assurances that any transaction will result from these discussions, and the Company does not intend to comment further unless and until an agreement is reached."

If public statements have been made, a deal is probably very close and very likely to happen. Usually rumors of mergers are denied until the deal is done.

This move is largely about spectrum. MetroPCS uses PCS and AWS just like T-Mobile so they are a great fit. MetroPCS being a CDMA carrier isn't a big deal. AT&T converted all of the Alltel markets that they acquired to HSPA+ and there's no reason why T-Mobile can't do the same thing with MetroPCS. Besides, all carriers are moving to LTE over the next few years anyways so this is actually very good timing.

Actually metro has lte already

And they have it on 1700 MHz, which I believe is also where T-Mobile is looking to use LTE.

So deal done now off to approvals and such. Going to be a public trade comp. Lets see if they learned better how to merge two disparate networks. The spectrum they will get will help a lot. Lets get that LTE network going.

T-Mobile, MetroPCS merging in $1.5 billion deal via Android Central

T-Mobile this morning announced that it's merging with MetroPCS in a $1.5 billion deal. The two companies will unite under the T-Mobile name, with current TMo parent company Deutsche Telekom to keep a 74 percent stake. The rest goes to MetroPCS shareholders, who also get the cash.

The two companies actually will remain operating as fairly separate entities. Two business units. One network. MetroPCS isn't going anywhere for a few years.

But in Deutsche Telekom and MetroPCS boards approve T-Mobile deal via The Verge

Update: We've now received confirmation that the companies have "signed a definitive agreement" to combine MetroPCS with T-Mobile USA. As reported, the new company will operate as T-Mobile, combining the subscribers and network coverage of both carriers. The deal is expected to close in the first half of 2013.

I think it makes sense to retire the MetroPCS brand.

I read on cnet that T-Mobile will will also get the 1900 spectrum... If so will I get hspa+ on my international hox?

T-Mobile is already in the process of enabling 3G on the 1900 MHz spectrum they already own. Cities like Las Vegas have started rolling this out.

Sweet thanks. I want to ditch straight talk and go over to T-Mobile. I don't know of they use the 1900 spectrum in Indianapolis.

Nothing really. Just that eventually, metro pcs towers will be set up to work with T-Mobile' s upcoming LTE network. It's mostly a spectrum grab by T-Mobile....

This will affect current MetroPCS customers more.
