T-Mobile Nexus 4 vs Play Store Nexus 4

Does anyone know if buying from the tmo website gets one to actually ship or is it just backordered?

I purchased one at $499 at tmobile. They said they thought it was locked to Tmobile but my AT&T sim card seemed to work so I bought it.
There was an update that automatically installed when I walked out. Shortly there after I went to AT&T to get them to record the IMEI # and replace the X one with this phone. Since then I have had intermediate data issues with the phone going back and forth to HSPA and HSPA +.
Talked to Google twice and AT&T twice. Nobody seemed to know exactly what would fix it. They suggested that it might be locked to Tmobile but everyone on the web seems to think otherwise.
I tried a hard reset which helped at first but then it started dropping the data connection again.
There is nothing in the software or settings that indicates it might have tmobile software in it.
It says it's on AT&Ts network.
Any advice would be great.

Its to save the battery. The Galaxy Nexus does the same on T-Mobile. When data is not in use, the phone switches from "4g" to "3g".

You can permanently switch to 4g by dialing *#*#4636#*#*, go into your phone information, scroll down and switch to WCDMA Preferred. This will reset though once you reboot the Nexus.

T mobile sales rep through the new acts dept confirmed no backorder and it would cost me about 400 with a new contract and canceling but the phone would be mine. Ordered last night, shipped overnight today.

Re: Nexus 4 vs T-Mobile Nexus 4

I paid 500 for the phone and signed up for the 50 bucks a month prepaid service, which I will forget to renew, left the store and popped my Straight Talk sim in and haven't looked back.

I am sort of considering the same thing... would you mind doing some speed tests with straight talk and letting us know how they went? Or... even better a you tube vid?

Do TMobile stores order phones to be shipped to you're house or can you only order via telesales and online to get it shipped?

With a Tmobile straight talk sim I average roughly 13015kbps down and 2250kbps up. Ping sadly can range from 112-1100 lol. This is using the speedtest.net app.

Re: Nexus 4 vs T-Mobile Nexus 4

I got a message from a tmo store rep that they rcvd shipping alert that they will be rcving new stock (at least here in Portland) on Wednesday Afternoon. So might be a sign of when google play gets their next batch, dont know for sure. But figured I'd pass it along.

I found a store in Jacksonville that has them in store right now. He told me that I can't order one over the phone and have it shipped to me in savannah. He also said he thinks it's locked to TMobile but isn't sure. so take it for what it's worth.

Checked one out at a local T-Mo store today. Very slick device. I'm coming from an iPhone so there's a bit of a learning curve and I didn't want to spend all afternoon fiddling with it, but it seems to be all it's cracked up to be. Feels very solid and well made.

The T-Mo rep did mention that software updates go either through T-Mo or Google depending on how big it is. Either way, I think my best bet is to be patient and wait it out until Google Play has more in stock.

The rep I spoke to in the big downtown Seattle T-Mobile store told me Wednesday as well.

The updates come direct from Google. When I bought my Nexus 4 from Tmobile, I popped a straight talk microsim on AT&T and was greeted by a system upgrade.

Re: The Play Nexus 4 and the T-Mobile Nexus 4

I bought a Nexus 4 from T-Mobile in store on launch day. Only select stores received around 6 total in stock. Since I was already on contract, the $199 price was a steal. The phone is amazing, and works great on T-Mobile's network. However, something to note: Even though all Nexus 4's are exactly the same, the ones bought on contract are indeed "locked". The wake screen shows T-Mobile's name at the very bottom. If I had bought the phone with no contract, it would have been "unlocked", and no branding. Side note: You can't buy the phone on contract for a lower price, then just use a non-T-Mobile SIM - it won't work. Now for those interested to know - I do have the option to cancel the contract and have the phone unlocked. Usually T-Mobile will charge a fee and they suggest printing out the instructions from Google and they will handle it. But, I've been with them for a while, and so they'll waive the fee to unlock the phone should I decide to leave. One last good point to make - Paying $200 (for the phone on contract) + $200 (to cancel my contract and unlock the phone), is only around $13 more than buying from Google directly (phone + shipping + tax). And is much less of a headache than the dreadful checkout hell everyone went through on Google's Play store, and there's no wait, no hassle, and I walked away with a brand new Nexus 4 day one! Good luck to everyone still trying to pick one up - it's a very nice phone :)

I don't think a lot of T-Mobile store clerks really know what they're talking about, I doubt they've all been given detailed information on the Nexus 4. They're just spouting the usual caveats that apply to the rest of the postpaid phones they sell, rather than appear clueless and say, "gee, i dunno." YMMV

As has already been stated numerous times here and several other places, your phone is already unlocked. There is no difference between an in contract Tmobile Nexus 4 vs. an off contract Tmobile Nexus 4 vs. the Nexus 4 you get from Google. They are all EXACTLY the same.

Re: The Play Nexus 4 and the T-Mobile Nexus 4

You are correct - all the phone are the same. That's exactly what I meant when I said "all Nexus 4's are exactly the same". I think you may have misunderstood my note about the phone being locked. As stated by T-Mobile, and confirmed by my own test... You can not buy a Nexus 4 on contract and use a non-T-Mobile SIM. In that sense, it is locked to the carrier. If you want to use the phone on another network, there are instructions from Google and changes T-Mobile has to make to "unlock" the phone. This is fact. Otherwise, only T-Mobile SIMs can be used with the Nexus 4 bought on contract. I hope this clarifies things.

That's sure. The 6 T-Mobile reps I spoke too, including those on the phone, where 100% certain the device was locked into T-Mobile. Not saying its their fault but if I were a rep at any tech store I would read up on the hot new items so I could give accurate info and my opinion. Like if LTE is not a biggy you may take a Nexus 4 over a One X.

I understood what you meant, I was just trying to say you were incorrect. The only way for your in contract phone to be locked to Tmobile would be if it had a different firmware then the off contract phone, it does not. They would need 2 sku's to differeniate between an in contract vs. off contract Nexus 4 if what you are saying were correct, again they do not. There is one Nexus 4 offered by Tmobile for both on and off contract purchases, it is EXACTLY the same.

Re: The Play Nexus 4 and the T-Mobile Nexus 4

Only a select few Tmobile stores are stocking it, you probably called one of the ones that aren't, hence the reason they had no idea what you were talking about lol.

Doesn't mean they shouldn't know about the phone itself.
