Tab S 8.4 Contact Issue

A friend bought a Tab S so I'm posting about her issue. I have a Tab 2.
It's a week old , KitKat 4.4.
The problem is that when addressing an email , the contact list is not found.
When I got it , I emailed them and I believe they saved my contact information ( and possibly set a default ?). Then , they uploaded their contact list to their Gmail account and synced with the Tab. The tab found all the addresses and they appear in the Contact app as expected however , when they create an email and start typing a name , the email program does not see ( or find ) the imported Gmail contacts. The only contact available is my contact entry that they originally saved. I don't know if it's a default location problem ? If I can't solve it , I'll just re set the Tab and start fresh , but if it's just a matter of choosing a setting to get the Tab to see all the addresses , I'd rather do that. I tried Contacts to Display , thinking the Gmail list might be hidden , but ALL CONTACTS was already selected , and choosing the Gmail only option didn't solve the problem.
Thanks in advance for any help

Contacts were synced / imported from Gmail. They appear in the Contact app.
When an email is created and you start typing a name ( that is in the contact app ) the device does not find them. The only address that is available from email is mine ( that was saved BEFORE the device was synced with Gmail )

Sounds like u need to use the stock @Email app icon. When you put the names in if the contacts have emails attached it will be added.

Have you tried clearing the cache in the email/gmail app? Uninstalling any updates to either and subsequently reinstalling? Manually syncing contacts in google account?

It's only a week old , so I'm just going to nuke it and start fresh....less bothersome. Thanks anyway
