Hi everyone,

Sorry if this sounds like a silly question, I have an S8 plus and was fiddling with my friends S9 plus and noticed that the 2X zoom seemed nothing more than pinching to zoom until it reaches 2 times, is there an advantage to this telephoto lens is it better than pinching the screen to reach 2X?

The camera has a 2x button that you can click to instantly go to 2x using the built in zoom lens.

When you are pinching to zoom, between 1x and 2x you are using the 1x camera and digital zoom until it hits 2x exactly.

Ok so at 2X it jumps to the zoom lens where as for example on my S8 it's the same lens for all zooms

Makes sense lol

2x digital zoom on your S8 is just cropping the image, which sacrifices image quality.

Having a dedicated, separate lens for 2x zoom means there won't be any sacrifice in quality. It's much better.

From reading other responses around the forums, the telephoto lens likely isn't 100% user selectable. It seems that Samsung has decided that if lighting is low enough, it'll force a 2x digital zoom of the main lens instead of the telephoto lens. I understand their reasoning (the telephoto isn't able to gather as much light as the main), but it still sucks that you can't override it. At least not that I've seen yet.

In other words we can't use it in pro mode?
