Telus S3 SMS freezing until restart

My wife is having an issue on her S3. She has had the sms app freeze every day or two. The stock sms app would flash to the "no messages" screen the way it would look if you had just opened it for the first time and she wouldn't be able to send or receive messages. Restarting the phone solves the issue temporarily until it happens again. Factory reset lasts a couple days. She is on the Telus network in Ontario Canada and we have exchanged the phone for a new one as well as exchanged the sim card and still the issue persists. This is my wife's first Android, she came from a blackberry and so far she is pretty disappointed because of this issue. I don't know what else but the network could be the problem. Have tried disabling stock sms app and using others and still no results. I have searched alot and came up empty handed, appears very few are having similar issues. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

I am also in Ontario, also on Telus and also using the S3. I have had it since December and have not once had your specific issue. Nor have I had any issues. I am coming from Blackberry as well and I am pretty damn pleased.
You have done all the right steps though. So based on what you have told me. Factory reset. new phone, new sim card, and can't be the network since I am fine.
Here is what I think it may be. I have a feeling it's something to do with one of her contacts, and how it's entered in the phone. That is just a hunch, but at this point you have ruled out everything else?
Does she have a huge list of contacts? Is she pulling them from her Google account? Were the backed up and then placed back on the phone after you got the new phone and sim?
Does it seem to happen when she texts one person specifically?
I can't be sure but I am thinking it has to be some kind of flaw in a character or something in one of the contacts that is causing it. Let me know, I am curious to hear
 
Hi mhinc and thanks for the reply, Majority of her contacts where sent to her from my note 2 using nfc. I will have a look through them and get her to try and pay attention to see if it is consistently happening with a certain contact. Site only has 37 contacts and yes they sync with Google account.
 
Considering that this is an uncommon issue, and it's happening to her even after exchanging for a new phone, I'm also thinking something along the lines of a corrupted contact info or maybe an incompatible app.

Hey thumpr77, how goes the battle? Did you find any anomalies with your wifes contact list? Or a specific contact?
 
Three days of no sms freezing, thanks for the advice! As I stated before my wife only has 37 contacts on her S3 most of which where sent to her from my note 2 using nfc. Here's what I did.

I went through each contact and edited the phone numbers by putting them in proper format +15555555 deleting all brackets and dashes and let the app format them. I also deleted website links that where in two contacts which where google plus links.

I'm not sure exactly what corrected the issue, but I'm leaning towards the website links as they where my Google+ contacts and not hers.

Awesome! That's great to hear! I am glad it worked for you! Fingers crossed that was indeed the issue and the freezing continues to just be a distant annoying memory!
