Temporarily back to 16:9 screen, and I like it

Watching videos suck on the S8 and S8 Plus. Just looks too small because the screen is so narrow. Stretching the video to make it full screen makes it look even worse.

However, using social media like Twitter, Instagram and Facebook is a joy. Watching video doesn't bother me either. It's not like you're losing anything. You're just not gaining anything...yet.

Very different experience for me. I absolutely love the larger screen, black bars or not. I actually tend to expand my video as well and while I lose a bit of content on the left and right side, the larger screen more than compensates. If you watch HDR compatible content it is even better. Or everything else, having a 2:1 ratio (same as 18:9) is even better because you can see so much vertical content, which is how you are likely to use your phone for productivity 90%+ of the time.

After setting the DPI to 520 on my S8+, going back to the iPhone 7 Plus feels distinctly like going from my 27” 2560x1440 desktop screen to a 19” 1280x1024 screen. Okay, I exaggerate a bit, but you get the point.

I think 18:9 and 18.5:9 aren't really different ratios considering that the .5 is often considered for the soft buttons on the Samsung and probably the upcoming iPhone. I do feel this is the way it goes and I hate to say it, but if Apple adopts it - then it'll be a foregone conclusion. I think Essentials 19:10 is an outlier.

I'm not sure about 16:9 being the 'logical' choice. So far I've heard only two real benefits that people have voiced about for the 16:9 phone is that there is no black bars on the left and right side when viewing 16:9 video. Is this really an issue where folks are willing to not buy a phone because of the annoying extra space that could possibly be made useful? The other being that the phone would possibly be less tall - which is debatable when comparing the S8/S8+ to other phones that would otherwise have this extra space used by a bezel.

So in my view, I don't see what people are losing from going with 18:9 over 16:9 other than some aesthetics when viewing 16:9 uncropped format.
I think it's more to do with how well it's supported over time.

If Apple jumps in on 18:9 or 18.5:9, then it's pretty much settled. Google's decision would also help solidify support.

And when Apple does it, it'll be deemed "The greatest aspect ratio created in the history of mankind." ;)

I absolutely didn't think I would like this new ratio, but I actually do. There are definitely positive and negative sides to it, but overall it's good with me. I do watch videos and while it's not a better experience, it doesn't take anything away either in my opinion. For everything else I do on my phone I prefer it. The S8+ is a very comfortable phone to hold and use. Up until now, the Note 7 was my favorite phone. While it's still close, I have to give the edge to the S8+ for ease of use.

Nope because 16/9 is better.

Im not so sure thats going to remain the case. Look how many monitors are using 21:9 ratio. Im typing this message on an LG 34" 21:9 and its unbelievably useful.

Theres a huge advantage to running an 18:9 ratio on a TV. Split screen. The ability to run 2 square football games at the same time would be substantially better than the way thats handled now.

LG is already adopting the 18:9 for phones and Samsung is doing the same. Those are 2 of the most popular TV brands on the market. Do you really think they arent going to come to market with the new aspect ratio? Sony is the only one of the major TV manufacturers who has stated they dont like the 18:9 ratio.

If you have the same screen area (or even a little more as is the case between the S8 and S7E) and 99.9% of every movie/video/game/app out there uses 16:9, you are looking at a smaller version of the movie/video/game/app on the "larger" 18:9 screen.

If the ":9" is the same height, then the video will be the same size whether it is 16:9 or 18:9 when it is uncropped 16:9. You will get the black bars on the edges for the difference between 18 and 16. You will not be looking at a smaller video.

Narrower screen = smaller video

If you have a narrower screen, then you don't have the same screen area as the person stated in the response I replied to. Do people understand how ratios work? For an uncropped video that is 16:9 - as long as the height is the same height (":9") - then whether the screen ratio is 16:9 or 50:9, the video is the same size uncropped.

If I hold my V20 5.7 inch screen next to S8 my screen is wider. You measure it with a ruler. Nothing to do with ratios.
