Seems like pressing *#*#4636#*#* from your dialer puts the phone into a diagnostic mode. And it seems doing this you can also select which radios you want to run including GSM only. Is this a way to unlock the phone to work on other carriers domestically?

Not through that method, nope.
You'll need to contact your carrier for the unlock code or purchase one online.

You could also just download LTE on/off
