I'm trying to get tethering working for an Android (3.1) toshiba thrive... anyone get it working on their Optimus V?

I've been able to get it working on my netbook and laptops (win 7), but not finding much on the thrive, unless I root it.

(I'm a newbie, and haven't rooted anything.... yet.)

TIA!

Hey good news u dont need to root download hotspot widget from market its free too

I use hotspot widget on my non rooted V (2.2) and it works fine.

Are you guys running 2.2.2 ?
or an earlier ver's OS?

fwiw, I installed 'hotspot widget', and it shows in my 'manage applications' but for some reason its not showing on my home. (no icon found).

I do show something that looks similar: 'wifi finder'

-the icons are sorted by alpha (name sort), correct? looking for 'H'

I'm lost... <sigh>...

It will not show up in those places u long press on home screen then scroll to Widgets press that then scroll through till u see hotspots widget

im confused.

are you trying to activate the wifi hotspot on the OPTIMUS so your Thrive can connect and use the optimus Vs data?

THAT is easy to do, turn on hotspot in any CM7 rom or with the widget in a 2.2 ROM. then go into wifi settings in the thrive and search for the Optimus V, it will look like any other wifi source, like your home router or something.

the way this is worded makes it sound like you think you need to root the Thrive. thats not true. you just connect like you would to ANY other WiFi source.

technically, you dont have to root anything at all.

Unless he is running 2.2.2, which I believe disables the hotspot capabilities, doesn't it?

Correct, running 2.2.2 on the VM optimus v. I have quick settings, and hotspot does not enable.

but, I can tether the OV my win7 netbook with easy tether (OK). (enable usb debugging). and a usb micro to a usb A. cord. (I'm fine using the cord).

only issue is if the laptop goes to sleep I need to toggle the enable usb off and on, then I'm reconnected.

so I wanted to tether the VM optimus v to the thrive, so I can connect out at the beach.

I figured I needed to download something on the thrive, but the tether apps, didn't have a option for android. (ideas?)

-on another note, I've been diligently reading the unlock/root threads... lots of info, but a lot of conflicting info too.

one thread has me downloading the LG drivers then setting the country to Singapore (and English). but the instructons were not for the optimus v. ( I have the java sdk installed)

Do I want to follow the gingerbreak thread for rooting? (2.2.2)

What is happening is WhenEVER I connect my usb cable to my pc, its wiping all my SD apps... (PITA). and I need to format the sd, and redownload.

*(I've only got a month on droids).

thanks for the help!

ps: on the hotspot widget:

I go to settingss, manage applications, see the hotspot widget (56.00kb) (ver 1.2) and my chioices are un-install <-highlighed. (the force stop, and clear date, move to SD, etc are grey-ed out/ un selectable).
(that means its installed correct?)

when I click the home button, the press the middle (dot matrix) to see the rest of the apps, its not listed (as I scroll down) -(I don't have that many apps mby 50?), and its not found. Also try the left / right view of the home button, not seeing it there either...
I'll uninstall and try to reinstall... strange?
using the data is the main goal on the phone... (connected to the tablet, or laptop/netbooks).

again, thanks!
--------
update: uninstall hotspot widget, go to app market, search / dowload, msg: successfuly installed. look at home, NOT THERE!???

note I see a review that it does work on the optimus v... (is it the version 2.2.2?)

ok, I look at running appls and its NOT there. in the Downloaded (tab) it is there(nice blue icon).
so how do I start it after its downloaded?

I go tot the all tab, select the hotspot widget, and the only option not greyed out is uninstall. (force stop /clear data/move to sd card, and clear cache) greyed out, and msg at bottom:" launch by default.

(lost/confused....) it should show up? or I need to look/turn something else on....

(lastly cm7 = http://www.cyanogenmod.com/blog/cm7-nightly-builds) ??? this is a rom for rooted phones? still stuck on instructions to root.

Widgets don't show up in the app drawer as an icon. To activate a widget, long press on the desktop and select widgets from the popup, look for the widget you want and select it. ;)

nice... I found the pop up menu, but it took a while,

I needed to slide the home screen to a more blank screen, then see the popup. touched the hotspot widget, and click it. (grey icon w/ green line below.. 30 sec later:

msg: portable hotspot, Network is unavailable

same result with quick settings.

what the heck am I doing wrong? :-\

Check the Android version your running. If it is a newer V with 2.2.2 then tethering has been disabled. You will need to root and install a custom rom to get it to work.

YES ver: 2.2.2

I've spend around 8hrs reading threads, oneclick, gingerbreak, etc.. the problem with the threads it they are old.
I was reading one, that pointed me to another, another, and another.
one part had me downloading the LG drivers, and setting the country to Singapore. but it was not for the opimus v. (but was liked in the how to thread.. post was 2/11 IIRC).

do I need to download the lg divers? w/ country as Singapore.
btw, my model is VM670. (was reading a big battery thread, but it was for a lg ls670 (IIRC).

can you or someone direct me to the CORRECT root thread for 2.2.2?

Do I want gingerbreak?

my goal is to tether... and I've got it working w/ easytether to a win7 (starter) netbook.

but not to a tablet.

thanks!

ok, tonight effort is on this thread:
http://forums.androidcentral.com/op...cks/111811-how-root-lg-optimus-v-2-2-2-a.html

wish me luck...
