how does tethering work with the nightly and Verizon from the dinc? does Verizon charge for it or is it free since I have super user access? would they even know!? thanks. hopefully can get a hot spot to run tablet off while traveling!

barnacle wifi tether in the app market...It's what i use, and is simple and works great.

If by nightly you mean a CM7 nightly, you can actually use the built in tethering. No, Verizon will not be able to detect you are tethering that way, as you are not using their software. If the built in tethering gives you trouble, then I would also suggest Barnacle. Hope that clears it up for you, happy tethering!

I went to Menu>Settings>Wireless & Networks>Tethering & portable hotspot> Portable Wi-fi Hotspot...is that the CM tether? I thought it was a verizon thing...

Yes they can still tell by looking at the data packets - very easily, actually..

Yes that's it

how can they tell how data being used and will the barnicle app mentioned above still be known by carrier?

thanks.

I won't explain the technical details, but basically the data appears different when it's being given off by the phone as a hotspot, versus when you're using internet on the phone itself. Trust me, it's very easy for them to see.

It doesn't matter what app you use - they can still see it if they look. Now you shouldn't run into any trouble unless you plan on using your phone as your main internet connection for your laptop, etc. If you only wanna use it for your tablet while traveling, you should be fine.

just tablet for now. but future maybe! doesn't matter that running the cm7 nightly HUH? Dangit

I occasionally use it for my computer...in limited capacity...maybe 4-5 times for durations of 1 hour or less each time...is that enough to make the Verizon Gestapo come looking for me?
