Tethering the LTE Nexus to a phone

I heard that the 2012 cell version couldn't be tethered to a phone.

Can the 2013 LTE version be tethered to a phone when there is no SIM card present in the tablet? My netbook has a TMO SIM that I'm planning on sharing between the netbook and the new N7, but I want to be able to tether the Nexus 7 to my SGS3 when the SIM is not available. If it can't be tethered, I'll just save the $ and buy a non-LTE N7.

That's what I thought. But there was some chatter that the 2012 version could access a router, but couldn't access a phone's hot spot for access.

A tether just looks like another wifi connection to the tablet. I have not heard that the 2012 edition was unable to connect to a tethered hot spot.

Seems unlikely, as a phone Wi-Fi hot-spot *is* a router.

You should have no problems tethering devices. As mentioned above, it's just another wifi signal that the device sees and will connect to it if one is available.

Has anyone been able to make the Nexus 7 (2013) model with LTE work as a hotspot with AT&T? I am on the 3GB data connect plan and I don't see an option in settings and mobile networks for the hotspot. Would sure be handy at times.

I just pulled a new one out of the box and fired it up. I have NOT updated it to the latest build.

I can't see Phil's pick so it may contradict this but there is a thread here or xda that looks like it is disabled with latest update on ATT sim. Take Sim out option I'd there. Put sim in and it is gone.

This may have been answered by now. But on my nexus 7 2013 lte when I insert a TMO sim Wi-Fi hotspot choice is available. When I insert ATT sim that feature disappears.

Maybe I am lucky or my plan is so old that my TOS never dealt with tethering, but with the latest I am still able to tether with at&t.

I am using the SIM from my Laptop Connect plan in my Nexus 7 LTE and I am tethering to my laptop without issue almost daily.

Got mine on Friday. It tether's fine with or without the SIM card in place. Love it!
