Tethering the NC?

I'm looking into getting a Nook Color and will try the rooting process. I was wondering if anyone has successfully tethered the NC using the program Tether and a smartphone. I haven't seen any discussion of tethering the NC.

Thanks

Currently tethering the NC with the DroidX. There is a hack on XDA-Developers that you had to enable to see AdHoc Networks. Wireless tether from the market just released an update that makes the DroidX infastrucre now versus AdHoc. Works like a champ!

Nice! I hope that the tethering will be "generic". I have a BB Storm that I tether my PC with using Tether. I'm hoping for an Android phone in April for my NE2 upgrade.

I've connected my Nook Color to my Droid Incredible running Cyangenmod 6.1 and Wireless Tehter without problems.

they may be getting rid of the NE2. im sure if you complain about it though they'll allow it.

CM 6.1 must set up tethering as an infrastructure instead of Adhoc. I'm using the generic Wireless Tether which sets up an adhoc network. Using the XDA hack I updated my NC so it can see Adhoc networks. It was cake.

this should only affect new or renewed contracts. if your current contract has a NE2 upgrade coming, even after the date when they eliminate NE2, they should still honor it when the time comes.

Strange, I couldn't get mine to show my Fascinate with Wireless Tether without the hack.

So the OP mileage may vary...

yeah, im just z4 rooted, no rom, just overclocked, stuff like that. i didnt have to use any hack at all to tether the X to the NC. "Android Tether" showed right up in the wireless list and i connected right to it.

Certain phones (evo, DX, etc) support using Infrastructure for the tether in the last few releases of Wireless Tether. The Galaxy S phones among others still only support AdHoc, so you'll need to apply the hack found in xda to get the NC to support AdHoc connections.

Either way, tethering is fairly straightforward.

I first got my Nook Color the day after Christmas. I tried to tether it ti my Droid X in the parking lot of the store and it didn't work but after the last update to wireless tether it saw the android tether right away and works like a charm.

Thanks for all the information, but what about tethering using a USB cable, has anyone done that? I have a BB Storm which does not have WiFi, so I have to either tether with a USB cable or Bluetooth (when that becomes operable by a developer). I've also been reading that the NC does not do USB hosting, so corded tethering might be a no go.

Maybe I just won't worry about tethering until I get an Android phone, just a couple of more months to wait.

Thanks again!!

For those tethering (particularly those using a Droid X), are you using an open connection, or are you able to use WPA and/or MAC filtering?

I tried tethering my laptop to my old original Droid last year using the Wireless Tether app (ad hoc only back then), and I could only get it to work using unsecured WEP. Any time I enabled WPA or tried filtering I couldn't access the internet.

i am using secured WEP on my droid X using wireless tether and have no issues whatsoever connecting to my NC. in my wireless list on my NC it come sup as "Android Tether". i just hit connect, put in my pw, and away i go.

I wasn't able to tether my Nook at first, but going to the market, I saw there was an update for Wireless Tether. Once I downloaded that update, it allowed for infrastructure, and I've been good to go since! :)
