Tethering with the Evo 3D

Found the following on the official Sprint community forums, hopefully this will answer some questions and once again...I am doing this on my home PC using the EVO 3D as a modem...successfully for FREE!! Why people continue to think I am making this up is beyond me but whatever...it works and I'm happy.

The HTC EVO has a feature called " internet sharing " when you connect your phone to a computer. This is the same thing as tethering. All you need to do is be in an area that has 4G and have it turned on when you connect your phone to your computer. If it doesn't prompt you to install HTC Sync the first time you connect, you need to select disk drive on the EVO, then look through the folders ( browsing the EVO SD card through your computer) and open the HTC setup software. This will install HTC's software on your computer. Its used to sync mail and calendar info that I don't have any use for. But for some reason it is required to be installed on the computer you want to tether with your EVO. Once you have all of the above done and your EVO is connected to your computer, you should proceed to open your network settings and select your EVO as the access point ( if it is not selected automatically). So to summarize, tethering requires nothing more than your EVO and your computer. Your phone does not need to be rooted. And also, the official froyo hasn't been released yet so I wouldn't think tethering would work with the version you have. Moreover, I believe froyo will restrict tethering at Sprint's request. That's my guess what will happen. Tethering is HTC'S IMPLEMENTATION NOT SPRINTS. But the EVO is used on SPRINTS network and Sprint wants to restrict tethering unless you pay $30 for the hotspot feature which is not the same thing as tethering. You can use tethering rightnow on your EVO for free, but Sprint wants your money for you to use it and I suspect they will try to restrict it one way or another. I have used tethering on my EVO doing exactly what I said. Make sure you have 4G bars and good coverage if u want it to work.....I hope this helps..

doesnt work. only options I get when I plug in the cables are internet pass through and usb tethering. It prompts me that I dont have tethring on my phone and please sign up. So I dont know how you got it to work.

This is what I got as well.

The only think I can think of is to make sure that you are in a 4G area and that it is on when you try. I'm no tech expert and don't know why it works for me but not others

In a 4g area here and it was enabled. Are you sure you r Not paying for hospot feature?

Tell us you're not paying $30 extra for hotspot first
I am NOT paying $30 for the hotspot...I repeat, I am NOT paying for the $30 hotspot...and I know several people that are not and it works for them as well, but it seems to be hit and miss and I don't know why. What version of android are folks running?

2.3.3 wifi tethering apps doesn't work well for me either
Wifi tethering doesn't work for me, only the USB tethering does...

Going thru my cell and finding the following:

android 2.3.3
HTC sense 3.0
software 1.13.651.7

It just occurred to me...is the USB debugging connected active??

Go to settings/applications/developement and make sure there is a checkmark next to USB debugging

Decided to go about this again from scratch. So took the cell to my friends PC

made sure first that cell was set to usb debugging

connected the cell via usb cable to pc
touched option that read usb tethering, then touched done
cell went to home page, pc screen said looking for drivers...couldn't find any so had to download them...get them here, note this is for vista 64 bit

Download HTC Evo 3D 64-bit Windows Drivers | Android Drivers!

seems to take a while to install but it works
after about a minute a screen on the pc comes up...set network location...I choose home..pc automatically sets the name to network 2 and private...close window

I then click on my network icon, go to network and sharing center...here I now see the current wireless connection my friend uses and the new network 2 (the usb tethered one)

At this point we can disconnect from the wireless one and connect to the new one and browse the internet via the EVO 3D

This is exactly what happened to my home pc and it also worked the same way, giving me usb tethering to the internet.

Another item I heard browsing other forums is that there is a rumor that the first 30 days of tethering is free and then the charge option appears, but if that is true, then wifi would be working as well and it does not for me...can anybody verify this??

Another rumor I read is that the drivers *I* used are some type of vanilla android drivers that allows free usb tethering, much like the nexus does/did. And that once sprint discovered this, took down those drivers until a fix could be worked in to disable that. Don't know about this but I did notice that there are NO official sprint OR htc evo 3d usb drivers...at least I can no longer find them and that the driver I currently have was only found at the link I posted above.

and yes...for the thousandth time...I DID NOT ORDER NOR AM I PAYING 30 BUCKS FOR HOTSPOT!!!! Why do folks keep mailing me and asking me to prove this?!?! I will not post a pic of my bill...that is ridiculous! If you wanna keep harassing me about something as silly as this, then I will keep my FREE WORKING USB TETHERING to myself and cease trying to help others here.

Well if I try to do it through normal USB tethering through the USB options it just goes straight to the Hotspot msg.

Only way I can get any sort of tethering is through easy-tether which uses the USB debug mode to get around things, or pdanet and use bluetooth or usb. No native tethering still.

Yea pdanet usb mode works well. I haven't had any problems with it. Maybe one day soon there will be a stable wireless hotshot option that didn't require paying sprint 30 bucks a month

LOL... ok... were you talking about using the Android WiFi Tethering apk in temp root mode?

I finally got it working in that mode, if you're talking about the native Sprint/HTC tethering then I'm lost.

EVO3D and Xoom...Anyone done this with PDAnet? I don't yet have a micromicrousb cord. Wondering if it'll Bluetooth to the Xoom. If I find out before a response here I'll report what happens when I try.
FYI Sprint will pro-rate the Hotspot to about a buck a day if not needed often but it is a bit PIA because you have to turn on at website level (order/pay) then turn back off...besides all the stuff on the phone itself.

My deal with all the stuff about what should and should not be 'free' is that I am paying for my connection and I just want it on the bigger Xoom screen sometimes. I can't use both at once so I am ripped off when Sprint charges me for Hotspot.

Yea I was talking about tethering with evo on sprint. It works every once on a while. Not worth the hassle.

The link didn't work. I'm on a temp root and barnacle didn't work for me. I wonder if it has something to do with my root
