Found the following on the official Sprint community forums, hopefully this will answer some questions and once again...I am doing this on my home PC using the EVO 3D as a modem...successfully for FREE!! Why people continue to think I am making this up is beyond me but whatever...it works and I'm happy.
The HTC EVO has a feature called " internet sharing " when you connect your phone to a computer. This is the same thing as tethering. All you need to do is be in an area that has 4G and have it turned on when you connect your phone to your computer. If it doesn't prompt you to install HTC Sync the first time you connect, you need to select disk drive on the EVO, then look through the folders ( browsing the EVO SD card through your computer) and open the HTC setup software. This will install HTC's software on your computer. Its used to sync mail and calendar info that I don't have any use for. But for some reason it is required to be installed on the computer you want to tether with your EVO. Once you have all of the above done and your EVO is connected to your computer, you should proceed to open your network settings and select your EVO as the access point ( if it is not selected automatically). So to summarize, tethering requires nothing more than your EVO and your computer. Your phone does not need to be rooted. And also, the official froyo hasn't been released yet so I wouldn't think tethering would work with the version you have. Moreover, I believe froyo will restrict tethering at Sprint's request. That's my guess what will happen. Tethering is HTC'S IMPLEMENTATION NOT SPRINTS. But the EVO is used on SPRINTS network and Sprint wants to restrict tethering unless you pay $30 for the hotspot feature which is not the same thing as tethering. You can use tethering rightnow on your EVO for free, but Sprint wants your money for you to use it and I suspect they will try to restrict it one way or another. I have used tethering on my EVO doing exactly what I said. Make sure you have 4G bars and good coverage if u want it to work.....I hope this helps..
