okay.... just switched from blackberry to htc 3d.... and learning.

dumb question. I see the temp root, but nothing perm yet. I see sprint is charging for mobile hotspot. Do I need to root to make a mobile hotspot?

If so are HTC/Sprint trying to block this once a perm root is found. Can they OTA update and block tethering once installed?

thanks for any help.

Also anywhere I can start reading for beginner access to file level apps, ect to start learning the device.

If you want free tether you can use temp root to do it. I have a thread here about how to do it: [Guide] - Free 3VO WiFi Tether - PPCGeeks.

Once a perm root is found they can always try to update to block it.

I was told that only 3G works. I dont have 4G and will prolly never get it here in Fargo ND.

Hey! Nice to see another Fargo user on the boards! I'm actually going to Minneapolis next week so I'll finally get to try out some 4G action on this thing. And it will probably be the only time, since Sprint is unlikely to ever bring it around here...

No doubt!

I tried this after the temp root and it said that it failed, any ideas why?
Ha! I was just about to post this... Got my 3D last night, root works fine, but Wireless Tether is no joy... in the log file it shows that everything works except "Activating WiFi Interface... failed." I've been searching but haven't found any answers yet. I was thinking of trying the beta version of Wireless Tether 3.1.

I assume you are using the Temp Root to try and use this anyway, but I seem to have run across quite a few posts saying that wifi tether still isn't working. Most people are reporting that barnacle tether is the only one working currently.

Yes I'm using the temp root and I verified with multiple root-only apps that I was in fact rooted. I tried Barnacle but couldn't get it to work either. I know that Barnacle only does ad hoc WiFi but I was able to connect to my laptop via ad hoc WiFi using Wireless Tether on my "old" Evo 4G, so that's not the issue.

how about a detailed step by step instruction to getting barnacle to work.

it's been a year now and i've never been able to make it happen on my evo.

I FINALLY got tethering working and am posting now using the Wireless Tether app. See this site for details. The key was to use the right version of Wireless Tether, the one linked in that thread. None of the versions posted on the official Android Tether development site worked for me.

Unlike what was mentioned in that thread, I didn't even have to change any settings, it worked first time using the version of Wireless Tether linked from that thread, and has been running fine for hours. Also I didn't have any error messages and I didn't have to use the "perma-temp root" mentioned in that thread, I just used the "basic" Fre3vo temp root mentioned in many threads.

ok, android newbie here but just got the evo 3d about a week ago and plugged it via usb into my pc, chose the option usb tethering, switched to the local access network once the driver was installed and viola...Im on the internet!

Free and simple...or is it??

my question, is this tethering free or am I being charged for this? I did not sign up for the $30 hotspot plan.

The one listed in your post did not work. Told me that the kernel lacks important files.

Wireless Tether will give you that error message but just ignore it and tethering works anyway.... well sometimes it works perfectly and sometimes it doesn't work at all, everything connects but no data flows. (And yes of course I know that you have to re-root after every restart and maybe more frequently than that.)

I've never been able to get Barnacle tether to work... everything connects but no data flows.
