AT&T has blocked my use of tethering and I want to know if there is a way to use this feature? I wonder if I were to unlock my phone or root if that would open up that feature? Any recommendations?:-[
Yes, tethering is exactly the same as creating a WiFi hotspot and AT&T blocks this feature to force users to pay for enhanced data plans that include tethering to generate more revenue. I don't use a lot of data because I normally just check email or surf a little. However, I don't like to respond to email on my phone because of the size of the keyboard (I'm not a big texter either) so I would use my netbook for email and typing.
However, from everything that I've read, you need to root the Vivid and employ an app to enable tethering. I tried rooting my N1 and was only able to figure out how to unlock the thing, after fighting with it for about eight hours. I never did figure out how to complete the rooting process. So, I'm a noob with issues, unable to understand most of the rooting instructions that I've found. Seems like the instructions are written for users that have experience and lots of knowledge about the processes, instead of being written for idiots like me.
In any case, I really like my Vivid, but I'd love it if I could tether without being restricted by AT&T. It would seem that Wild Child's hacks have garnered a lot of respect around here, but I am deathly afraid to try rooting again after the fiasco I experienced with the Google Nexus 1 attempt.:-\
I can help you with every step of the way. I love WildChild's ROM, and I know how to do everything correctly and can help you step by step. And yes, people love WCX, it's fast, stable, and there are many tweaks.
I would be very interested in taking you up on your offer. I still have my Nexus One as back up and I am ready to try to root my Vivid. How long to do you thing this would take and when would you be available to work on this excellent idea?
