Tethering

Did some searching but didn't find an answer to this question.
I have a stock Droid X, running 2.2
Can I tether my laptop to the X without rooting or paying $$$$ to verizon?

With the Tether app, do I need to root?

The other is PDAnet, used to be free 30 day trial, easy to set up and use. From June Fabrics. (don't ask me....)

I suggest rooting. That way you have all the tethering you'd ever need.

PDANet is what I have used in the past, after the trial period it will no longer connect to secure sites. If you are rooted, Wireless Tethering is a great and stable application.

Do you need any software on the PC?

PDAnet gives you a little thingie, technical term, on the PC so that when you connect on your phone, it recognizes the PC.
