Text expander built into the keyboard?

On iPhone, I had "shortcuts" I used for frequently type words and phrases. For example, when I typed in "addr", my address would pop up. Or "tele" for my phone number, or "eml" for my email etc.

I have the native Samsung keyboard, the Google Keyboard, and I bought Swiftkey from the Market and I can't seem to figure how to add this feature. How do I do text expander like shortcuts on my S4?

The first time I saw that was with my Blackberries, I used it a lot so I know that it can be missed a lot, BUT, since I'm on Android, I've been using Swype and the sort of, and I've never looked back, once you learn how to swype to type your words, you won't need to create, learn and use shortcuts to type what you want. Just my humble opinion.

But to answer your question, no, I haven't seen that in Android, it may be possible that exists in some Keyboard apps, maybe somebody here know about it, but hey, try the swype, give it a chance and see for yourself. Good Luck.

That setting is in android. But I'm not sure if you can access it without being on stock Android. In stock Android, you can create shortcuts, but I'm not sure if u can do that with touch wiz

If u did, it would be somewhere in the inputs section of your settings

I half looked in to this a while ago but couldn't be bothered to try it out as it seemed to much of a faff.

Like you Razeus, I am also an avid fan of shortcuts having used them with the iPhone for the past x number of years. It's incredibly frustrating at the moment (loving my new Galaxy S4 otherwise) when I have to input email addresses and postal addresses etc. I've just downloaded the app as recommended above but will have to see how it goes. If you do happen to find the android equivalent, would you please let me know...cheers!

As someone above mentioned, there are some keyboard apps that have this feature - but not all. I know Kii does. As you evaluate keyboard apps, you will need to decide if that feature is worth it over other keyboards. For example, I came from a BB and loved that so I tested out Kii. But, at the end of the day, I have been more impressed with Swiftkey so I am willing to give up on the textexpander feature.

A.I.Type keyboard has that feature. It presents the custom text in the first suggestion box before other suggestions if any. You can add/delete/edit the autotext keys and values from the settings menu.

I missed this old BlackBerry feature as well. I didn't know Nexus devices supported this, which makes me wonder why the Google Keyboard doesn't as well (I thought it was the same keyboard?).

To be honest though, I've come to love Swiftkey too much to go back to anything else. A lot of of times stuff like this is just part of the learning curve with any new device.

If you want to have text expansion features when using a hardware bluetooth keyboard, Blueduino is an option.
It allows managing and searching commonly used text snippets that are available within all the apps by just typing the shortcut on the keyboard the app looks it up and expands it. I think they're also into providing a soft keyboard in a future version that has these capabilities
