Text message notification

How do you make the screen light up and give a preview of the incoming text?

If using the native messaging app:
Open the messaging app to the home page (where the list of received messages is shown)
Touch the three dot menu on the upper right.
Select settings, then select Notification settings
Put checkmarks in Notifications, Message pop-up and Preview.

Why not try a different message app such as chompSMS, the app has loads of settings
