Since the update, I lost my text notifications for individual contacts. And I can't find where to set them up again. Help?

There's at least half a dozen threads here about this already and even a sticky. Do a search to find the answers. Samsung removed the ability to have individual notifications for messages with the Oreo update.

Well, I wouldn't say Samsung removed it exactly. I'm pretty sure something changed in this area with Oreo, and Samsung will need to re-work that function to fix it. I'm guessing (hoping?) They will. Seems to be an issue for a lot of people.

Actually, Samsung did remove it. I went here to voice my concerns, like everyone here should do, so Samsung will get the message and bring back the feature:

And said all of this:

Why in the world would you remove such a fantastic and worldwide used feature like individual notifications in the messaging app with Oreo update? IT MAKES NO SENSE AT ALL!!! You are going to lose a LOT of customers over this ridiculous decision! Quit trying to give us LESS choices when the whole reason we have Android is for MORE choices!!!

I received an email response from them this morning:

"We understand the disappointment you have expressed about the missing of option to set individual notification tones for messages. I'll help you with the required information.

As of now, the option to set individual notification sound for a message app is unavailable on the phone. We are not sure if/when this option will be added to the phone due to the fact that this might set incorrect expectation to you.

Samsung is constantly improving and updating our operating systems, and with every improvement there is always a chance an older feature may be changed or removed. We value your input about your favorite features on our devices. We will take this as a valuable feedback.

Hopefully you might be getting the feature that you are expecting in the updates which will be released in the future. "

So, if enough of us complain at the above link, they WILL get the message but it all depends on everyone doing their part to make it happen. Do nothing and Samsung thinks you like it without individual notifications for messages.

People in the Sony forum are complaining about the same problem.
I don't think it's samsung.

What is the purpose of individual notification? Does that mean you hear different sounds when different people text you? Not sure what the value is and I would love to know why it is a highly desired feature.

Yes. People can have different text tones, like they could have different ring tones. One of its benefits is being able to tell who was texting even without checking the notification, even if the phone isn't on hand. It helps you prioritize if you'll read it immediately or not. A text from your drinking buddy wouldn't elicit the same reaction as a text from your mom I'd wager.

Well then, I stand corrected!

The way the email read is that Samsung took it away and said they might bring it back.

Exactly.
If I'm in the middle of something and I get a text with my buddy's notification I know it can wait, but if it has my job's sev1 notification, I know I need to check it.

idc about the individual contacts as much as I do having distinct sounds for different apps. I can't seem to do that either

It was taken for the Samsung app. I still use it in the Textra app.

You can still do that, it's just buried in settings - notifications, then pick the app.

Thanks for the info. You have to be really be paying attention to hear different tones for different people. But I guess you train your ear to listen for the differences. I often don't hear my phone at all so I check it every hour to so. I would keep it close if there was someone ill and I was waiting to hear, or a traveler from out of town was due, but normally I figure everything can wait without any problems ensuing. I'm from a different generation and I am only about 25% technology addicted. lol

It really isn't difficult and no training involved.
If there is a knock at your door vs the doorbell ringing I'm sure you can tell the difference.

Wow. Are you always a jerk? Nastiness not needed.

I can tell who is texting me without looking at my phone. So I can tell when it's a text from an important person that I want to read right away.
