Text notification

Since the update, I lost my text notifications for individual contacts. And I can't find where to set them up again. Help?

i am still on android 7.1 and i am using Mood for messaging. it allows you to set individual notification..
you may want to check out that app

I agree. Though it was a minor feature, this was one of my favorite features. Actually it was all about emotional response. With different text tones, you can easily make out who is texting you especially while you're driving.

You first have to know how to reflash new OS onto phones. It's much easier to just use a different SMS app.

Hey Guys, I know how frustrating this issue is as I experienced it as well. BUT, there's a great workaround for now until hopefully they bring back the feature in an update. Head on over to the Google play store and download SMS Popup.

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=net.everythingandroid.smspopup&hl=en

1. Once downloaded, open the app and select the empty checkbox next to Enable SMS Popup to start the service.
2. Press Notifications and then navigate to Contacts Notifications to find the specific contacts that you want to set the custom notification sound for.
3. Type in the name of the contact and tap on it once it shows up under the search bar.
4. Tap on Notification Sound to select the custom notification tone for your contact and press Test Notification to give it a trial run.
5. If you don’t want the SMS Popup app to bring quick reply pop-up screen every time you get a new message, be sure to disable Show a Popup or you will receive two notifications.

There are additional notification tools such as the LED Configuration panel which you can use to set custom LED notifications for a specific contact too. I've been using it since the day of the update and truly works great. Hope this help you Guys for now!

Actually, Samsung did remove it. I went here to voice my concerns, like everyone here should do, so Samsung will get the message and bring back the feature:

And said all of this:

Why in the world would you remove such a fantastic and worldwide used feature like individual notifications in the messaging app with Oreo update? IT MAKES NO SENSE AT ALL!!! You are going to lose a LOT of customers over this ridiculous decision! Quit trying to give us LESS choices when the whole reason we have Android is for MORE choices!!!

I received an email response from them this morning:

"We understand the disappointment you have expressed about the missing of option to set individual notification tones for messages. I'll help you with the required information.

As of now, the option to set individual notification sound for a message app is unavailable on the phone. We are not sure if/when this option will be added to the phone due to the fact that this might set incorrect expectation to you.

Samsung is constantly improving and updating our operating systems, and with every improvement there is always a chance an older feature may be changed or removed. We value your input about your favorite features on our devices. We will take this as a valuable feedback.

Hopefully you might be getting the feature that you are expecting in the updates which will be released in the future. "

So, if enough of us complain at the above link, they WILL get the message but it all depends on everyone doing their part to make it happen. Do nothing and Samsung thinks you like it without individual notifications for messages.

I added my two cents!! Told them if I wanted a boring phone then I would have bought an Iphone!!

My messages in samsung note 4 would not chime for weeks. Finally realized that the notifications were hidden for the messaging app. When I unchecked the hidden box it started working. So happy.

Plug into your PC and open the phone internal storage. Navigate to "phone/android/media/com.google.android.talk/notifications" copy the sound files you want into this directory and they will show up in your notification sounds. Happy camper here!

You can add custom notifications for conversations through the default samsung messaging app. You click on the more button with the three dots.
