Texting Problem and 3G issues?

I've only had my Shift for two weeks but I switched from the Hero, so i'm pretty familiar with the system.

My 3G at the top of the screen will sometimes go gray and stop shooting the arrows up and down. Turning the mobile network on and off usually doesn't do anything.

Even if I have full bars of service if the 3G goes gray my texts will not go through. I will get a fail send message, and the recipient usually ends up with 6 or 7 copies of the text, even if I don't try to send it again when the phone alerts me that it failed.

I've tried turning the 4G on instead but haven't noticed a huge difference. Shouldn't texts be able to go through without the mobile network on?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Oh, and this happens in both the default messaging system and in Handcent.

Thanks!

If I had to guess it is Handcent causing a conflict. You do not need 3G to send txts, SMS is a mobile network service and does not need data connections to send. Your 3G should also go gray if it is white all the time that means it is constantly connected and uploading/downloading.
