Both. And they responded to my email, the one with proof it's not my device that's the issue. Just blew me off again. This is such bull.

I'm on T-Mobile with my G5. Binge On is turned off

Hey, I had the same issue with my G5. I went to the app manager , went to the upper right hand corner and hit uninstall updates. It then tells you the app will go back to the factory one and works with 1080p

Phones which are affected as far as I know list:

Sony Xperia X
OnePlus 3
Huawei P9
LG G5
LG G3

Yesterday I bought a Xiaomi MI5, I have the same problem on youtube, but I've noticed that only in 60fps videos does not work 720p and 1080p, cause MKBHD works fine in 1080p, but in gamplays in 60fps only works 480p

Open YouTube, tap Menu>Settings>General, and make sure "Limit mobile data usage" is not turned on

This is a problem on my new Sony Xperia X. A lot of youtube video only shows 480p option as max.

Tested on HTC M8 and there the 1080p option is working (all solutions possible)

Have checked the standard limitations and this problem persist on both WiFi and LTE (mobile). Have tried uninstalling all updates, can not uninstall youtube since it is a system app on Sony phones.

Any ideas how to solve?

Can you access YT through a browser window?... does it behave the same as the app?

I wonder if a non-google www browser fixes this?

Just tested it. It works perfect when you use Chrome and request the desktop site. Have all resolutions up to 1080p60. An example of that is this video by Jingles : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=viCN3oC3Tjw
It shows up in the APP as MAX 480p. In Chrome on the same phone, desktop site it is 1080p 60fps

I have a guess that it is the 60 fps there is the problem. A different video where you can watch in 1080p in the APP is this : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W85G-IkH0Dw by Schmee150. It doesn't say 30fps, but I guess it is since not showing anything but 1080p.

So here it is - It seems that some new phones (in my case the Sony Xperia X) won't play more than 480p if it is in 60fps.

All is still working on the old HTC One M8 Youtube App. Anyone have any good ideas?

My Huawei P9 is affected too. I am from Spain, network by Movistar (300/300 mbps). Videos with 720 or 1080p with 60fps I can't choose that qualities.

I called Huawei for this problem, and before try some things with a technician on the device, they told me that is 100℅ YouTube fail. They told me that the device will be update soon to Nougat, and that will be fix the problem possibily.

Aren't there alternative youtube apps?, I thought I saw 1-2 once... IIRC they are like 3rd party apps that are more basic in function, for just video playback... no live streams, no uploads and none of the social media aspects. I wonder if those (if they do in fact exist) will work?

FWIW, I clicked on both those vids and have no problem viewing them at 1080p, highest setting. Whether in the YT app or Chrome browser makes no difference. My version YT app is 11.29.55, I think it was just updated 3-4 days ago.

Someone in an earlier comment was saying to capture a screen image with the app and then one with a browser, showing the difference and send it to google/YT. I don't think they (google / YT) really did anything about it though.

Anyone have any luck on a fix yet?

All data limiters are disabled, all software is up to date (multiple times over) , all cache and data has been erased and reset.

OnePlus 3, LG G5, LG K8, and Samsung Galaxy S7 are some of the devices known to suffer from this issue with YouTube version 11.23.56

I'm also having the same problem on my unlocked galaxy note 7
YouTube version 11.29.55

Ok, so it's now fixed on my T-Mobile LG G5. Idk if it was the newest update or my factory reset. Or maybe it was a combination of the two. I just know that I updated the app, and it was still maxing out at 480p. Then I did the one thing I hadn't tried, because I hate doing it, a factory reset. Once I had all my apps installed and updated, and had all my settings back, I tried YouTube. HD and 60fps content are both back to the way they should be. I have noticed however, that I'm now experiencing an issue other users have had. Often, if I leave a video running in the background, when I come back the image is frozen, but the audio continues. I have to scrub to another part of the video to fix it.

So you can start a YT vid, minimize the app leave it running in the background and still hear the audio? how do you do that? My YT completely stops streaming once I minimize the app to the background.
