The cost of the Pixel/Pixel XL

The amount of mental gymnastics Pixel owners go through to reach their conclusions is mind-boggling. Only Pixel and iPhone owners will tell you that paying more for less is a good value. There is literally no reason to buy a Pixel over a Nexus 6P.

Except there is. The camera is better in practice; you get Google Assistant without resorting to unofficial mods; the fingerprint reader controls the notification shade; you get unlimited full-quality Google Photos backups; there's faster overall performance.

I really, really wish people would stop conflating their personal tastes with those of everyone else. Sure, you can enjoy the Nexus 6P, but please don't insist that a year-old phone is better than something that has made clear generational leaps in hardware and software.

Just Google it. They have acknowledged the issues and are (once again) reaching out to users for more info.

I am glad that everything works at your end... it didn't here. And it doesn't for a lot of other folks. Here, the software user experience you speak so highly of (and which I agree is paramount) is better on my Nexus than it was with the Pixel.

I imagine they'll eventually get things worked out as they usually do (which is why updates are so important). My point is the out of box experience for a premium phone should be better than that of a developer device.
My point is every premium device has issues for certain set of users, you just google iPhone 7 issues, Note 7 issues, S7 issues, Pixel issues, [insert any premium phone here] issues.

We can measure fact on is X processor faster than X due to specs... You can't tell me just because you value the extra stuff and I don't that I'm factually wrong. Value is an opinion based thing. Some people see value in a Macbook and I don't... Does it make it any less valuable? No. It just doesn't fit my needs.

You need to stop taking your value and pushing it as a fact. You're welcome to love Samsung or whoever else but telling others they're wrong simply because they don't agree with your views is getting kind of ridiculous.

I understand, and get your point... but I feel you're simply dismissing mine. Google needs to up there game in this regard to address the market they have chosen to enter... much more so than Apple or Samsung**.

**Oh gawd did I just say that? If left a really bad taste in mouth which I am now going to wash out with Bulleit 10 year old. (c;

Well said...well put - and really really true - Pixel on!

Which is a better value: a bag of 10 apples for $1 or a bag of 15 apples for $1?

Your value proposition is false or at least misleading. Value is getting the most of what you want at the lowest price (i.e. efficiency of expenditure).

Suppose what you really want are apples.

Samsung sells a bag of mixed fruit (apples, oranges, bananas, kiwis, lychee nuts, etc.). The bag is $20 but only contains four (4) apples and 16 assorted other fruit.

Google sells a bag of twelve (12) apples for $35.

By your logic the Samsung fruit bag is the better value because you get "more" stuff for less money.

BUT if you only want apples, the Google fruit bag is the better value. To get the same twelve (12) apples from Samsung, you have to buy three (3) bags at $60 vs $35 from Google. Plus if you go with Samsung, you have to either eat fruit you don't want, give it away, or attempt to sell it.

The value proposition is a bit more complicated than you propose.

Me? I just want apples . . .

I have an honest question though and it's off topic so feel free to delete it if you'd like but.........

Why not ban the trolls? They make it difficult to talk about the phone, get help and share experiences when they littler every single thread with the same exact postings over, and over, and over, and over again?

I mean okay, one or two posts hating on the phone would be fine but when it's every post they make and in just about every thread in existence? Should the people who have the phone and want to discuss the phone not be able to do so without wading through all the troll postings? And in all honestly, all of these disruptive posts are coming from a select few individuals...

Honest Q.. But feel free to delete it if it's inappropriate or to far off topic..

Value is, at least in my opinion, something that can't be measured.

If I were given the opportunity to go back in time to do my purchase of my Note 5 and my Pixel over again, I would not hesitate on the Pixel, but would definitely reconsider on the Note 5. Samsung crams so much extra stuff in the OS that I don't use. So in my case, the Note is overpriced (as there are feature sets that aren't used) and the Pixel is about right.

However, there are Note users that would disagree with me in the fact that they use those feature sets. So the value equation is immediately inverted.

Please send me an email if you want to discuss further. We don't discuss actions taken with anyone other than the person we're dealing with, but I can explain how our system works and why we use it the way we do. I don't want to derail the thread further though.

I partially disagree with you. There are tangible metrics for assessing a handset that can be broken down and quantified. At the same time, there are intangible qualities that can only be assigned value in a subjective manner. As such it is difficult to create a standard measure for these qualities.

To me it's pretty simple...

People either want and accept the pricing for a $650-$900 phone or they don't.. If they think that the $650-$900 range is acceptable for any phone (Samsung, iPhone, LG et al), then there is no reason whatsoever to exclude the Pixel from the list...

If that $650-$900 range is to high for any phone then the Pixel is also out of the question...

One of the negatives that I keep hearing is that the Pixel is too expensive, is it really? I was thinking about what the true cost of the physical device is and I broke it down as such. I purchased an XL 32GB. Assuming I keep this device for 1 year and use it on an average for 3 hours per day (YMMV).

Price: $820.00 (Device + 6.5% FL sales tax)
Hours in a year: 8,760
Cost per hour: $0.09 (820 / 8760 = 0.0936)
Average cost per day (3 hour average): $0.27 (0.09 x 3)

So, for $0.27 per day I have a device that keeps me connected and does what I need from a personal and work perspective. In addition it is on the bleeding edge of Android ;)

I understand that there are other less expensive options available with similar specs, but when you look at the cost per day there is not much of a difference. So, based on how much these devices are part of our lives are they really too expensive? For me, I don't believe so, but I can certainly understand the sticker shock of an $820 phone.

NOTE: This is based on the physical device and not voice and data plans.

Unfortunately, defenders are praising the free photo storage, 24/7 support, and AI as their reason for the price. But let's face it, I'd rather have sd card support, waterproofing, wireless charging just to name a few. In reality, there are quite a few phones that will show up the pixel. Before you think I'm a pixel hater, I'm not. I bought one. But I'm having a great deal of trouble with Google charging the price they did, for what we got. My galaxy S7 EDGE still reigns supreme. You cannot see the speed difference or fluidity difference. I'll go one better. As an audiofile and professional musician, I bought a ZTE axon 7 for the dolby atmos and the best speakers in any smartphone. What surprised the hell out of me is what you got for 400.00 bucks. Build quality as good as the pixel and S7 EDGE, super speedy and very smooth. Once again indistinguishable from the pixel in real world applications. 64 gigs of internal, 4gigs ram, SD CARD SUPPORT, and if 64 gigs are good enough for you, you can use double Sims. Great if you're a traveler.

Why not return the Pixel and go back to S7 edge or Axon. Speak with your wallet if you have so much problem with the pricing and don't see the value it provides.

I agree ^^^^^^^^^

I love the Pixel but don't know / have not decided if it's worth the $700 (after sales tax) I spent to upgrade my Nexus 5.. I absolutely love the Nexus 5 and rocked it all the way until the Pixel arrived..

When I use the Pixel, I am confident I am keeping it but then when I pick up the Nexus 5 I have doubts as to if I want to spend $700 for the difference...

I am torn.,, The Pixel is beyond fantastic but I miss my Nexus 5.. Yes I know, I am crazy...

As long as it's not a secret, right? 😝

Agreed... but frankly this is just another Google phone. Bluetooth issues, reception issues, camera issues, Android Auto issues (which is a new first).

The software experience is typically Google, and I don't see it being appreciably better than Nexus phones of the past.
Exactly. Too many people drinking the pixel kool aid. I mean, this is exactly what Google was going for, but it is fascinating to me how successful it is, at least on this site.

Have you used a Pixel? And no, a demo unit does not count...
