The Evo 3D won't be the same breakout hit that the Evo 4G was

Well for what it is worth, I came from the Evo 4g and decided to pass on the Evo 3d. I liked the power, but could not get over the 3d in the end. Would of preferred that they built upon the success of the original Evo with perhaps a better camera and/or NFC capabilities rather than useless/painful 3d gimmick (sp). I am sure many here will likely disagree with me, since they chose the 3d, but to the original poster's point, yes the 3d may not be the breakout hit it was - not even within Sprint itself.

I hear what you're saying. I, too wished there would be a 3D-less (possibly thinner) version offered. I also wished for NFC in this phone as evidenced by this thread i started shortly after the official announcement of this phone: http://forums.androidcentral.com/htc-evo-3d/70920-no-nfc-evo-3d.html

But, to build on what was discussed in that thread, even with the new Google Wallet, and the new Paypal service, it will be another year before all of this becomes mainstream. And yes, I will still be very pissed if this tech is in the new iPhone 5, making it seem like this was an Apple innovation when HTC could have included it in this device, but NFC is literally useless right now. There is no point to it. Also, I must admit that I am having much more fun with the 3D than I expected to have.

As for the camera. adjust the settings and you're good to go. I really think you should spend some time playing with it before you pass, if you haven't already.

I get what everyone's saying about the fact that the EVO 3D is more than a 3D device but from what I saw in commercials, it looked like the 3D was their big selling point.

Yes, because HTC and sprint have not yet figured out that 3D isn't as big of a marketing tool as they think it is. This is evidenced by them naming it the "Evo 3D", instead of the Evo 2.

But, when you actually research the device, you'll see that the Evo 3d is actually a very decent and powerful 2D smartphone with the capability of shooting and displaying 3D photos and video. These features are optional and the 3D is NOT present in the UI, like the commercial would have you believe.

I agree with everyone that there was some marketing fail, here. I've heard a *ton* of people say stuff like "I don't want one of those. 3D stuff gives me a headache." People totally misunderstand the concept and I blame HTC/Sprint's marketing of this as the Evo 3D rather than the Evo II or even the Evo+ or something, if they were wanting to be cagey :) I think, like everyone was saying, the 3D feature was the only thing that really set this phone apart for everything else coming out right now, which is why they pushed it so hard. Probably not the right way to go, but I can understand why they did it.

That said, I picked one up about a week after they came out as an upgrade to my Evo4G (with only a $75 subsidy) and I love it. I didn't think it would be, but the increased screen resolution really is noticeable. And the thing *flies*. I loaded up Gorilla Bob last night and couldn't get over how incredibly smooth the frame rate was.

Netflix is now working and I can't wait for HuluPlus. I do miss the kickstand, but the new features are worth it.

Even people I've shown the 3D to, most of them find it amazing. A couple of people immediately turn away "it hurts my eyes" and I'm like "you weren't even looking at the screen for 3 seconds." But, whatever. To each their own. I'm not sold on the idea of watching a full-length 3D movie on the thing, but I love being able to take 3D pictures/videos of the kids.

This is another great phone from HTC, and I'm looking forward to enjoying it for the next year or so :)

I prefer to think there won't ever be an Evo #. I think they will name each iteration after whatever the new tech is...for instance, OG Evo - Evo 4G...4G was the new tech...Evo 3D...3D is the new tech...

I absolutely agree with you. I wish Sprint would have talked about the awesomeness inside the phone.

Lol, I hear you too, it was a tough decision for a reason, but within a year, I expect ICS to be out and then add a few months for HTC to update it, then HTC may become the choice, but by that time, there may be other phones, with NFC, a better camera, and dual core to boot. So for right now, at this point, I chose the Nexus S 4g - a real solid phone with free wireless tethering out of the box which is real tempting, even if I have not used it much in the real world. Perhaps, by the end of the week, ICS will come out and then HTC may update it within a month or so - at which point I would have made a bad choice, but I doubt that that is the timeline.

ICS is not expected until around October sometime...
