The Galaxy Note 7 has played a (negative) part in the S8

It's a crying shame about the Galaxy Note 7. Not just for its own sake, but for the detrimental impact it's had on the new S8.

The battery capacities are very conservative and relative to the screen sizes, they are smaller thank the S7 phones.

Samsung had a choice. Either provide a larger capacity battery but increase the phone's thickness. Or keep the phone slim and to avoid a repeat of the Note 7, play it safe and provide very modest capacity.

I would have preferred the phone to be thicker. I've said before that the terrible location and small sensor size of the fingerprint reader is a deal breaker for me. But if the S8 had say a 3500 mah battery and the S8 plus had a 4000 mah battery, I could have overlooked the fingerprint scanner.

Such a shame the Note 7 has negatively impacted the S8.

Actually, as a Note user, had 2, 4, and pre-ordered 7, IF the Note 7 never got recalled I would NEVER had been in the current position of now being an S8 pre-order customer. I never saw myself as ever owning an S phone, just couldn't hold off any longer for the Note 8 so...

Friend, what a mistake! Samsung will go all out on the Note 8 to make up for the Note 7. You should have held on just a little bit longer.

Samsung chose to go with a 3000 mah battery to keep the phone thin. They chose to keep the race for thin going and compromised battery size. All the Note 7 fiasco showed was that they couldn't make a 3500 mah battery safe enough for that thickness. It was bound to happen I would say.

So, Now they know to fit the right battery for the right size... but they still want to go thin. We'll see if that sd835 really is efficient enough to carry decent SOT. I really doubt they will match S7 Edge SOT which is a shame. I just played with the S8 again today... with the way the sides are curved that make it seem thinner than the G6, They could have added 1mm to the phone to give a bigger battery and I bet it still would have "felt" thinner than the G6 or even the iPhone.

Look at the vid below just for side by side comparison on the G6... it looks chunky, but it's about the same thickness. But it feels great in the hand... arguably better than the S8 imo.

They could have gone thicker and bigger battery. They didn't want to.

Honestly I will never get the obsession with MAKING SMARTPHONES SO THIN.

You're telling me if it were thicker it would affect how it's handled or sales?

I got the moto Z recently, boredom and was asking family and friends if they cared how moto claims it's the thinnest smartphone. Not one cared.

I actually don't mind thin phones and would probably prefer thin over thick... if you can give great battery life.

When looking at these two phones, I do at times compare it to my iPhone 6 that I've been using for last year and really appreciate more the engineering behind it... the super thin metal body with great performance and one of the best batteries I've had in a phone. I'd wake up 5:30am fully charged and I rarely have to be concerned about battery by the time I'm ready to sleep at 11pm with like 20-30% still left... in an 1810 mah battery! Wife's 6plus had crazy good battery with a 2750 mah battery.

The S6 I had a chance to play with had a 2550 mah battery... that thing sucked so bad I could barely get to 5pm and searching for the car charger to get me through the evening.

We'll see what the S8 will do.

The thing I find funny is how people want thin phones, then run out and get a case for it to make it thicker so they can hold onto it better. Anybody ever see the irony in that.....LOL

I agree lol. That's why I try to put the thinnest case I can on my iPhone or Androids.

Battery has never been an issue for me. I have a tiny 2000 mah power bank in my bag

I would normally agree with you to make the phone thicker but I was comparing the specs of the S8 with the S7. The S8 is 8mm thick and the S7 is 7.7mm. So there is nowhere for the S8 to go as it's already thicker than the S7. Making it 15% thicker would make it closer to 1 cm thick.

To increase capacity, you have to increase length and width of the battery. In other words, a compete redesign of the housing. Most probably there are so many parts and sensors etc for all the gadgets and features that it is not possible.

So either have the phone 1cm thick or suffer a small battery.

Well, thank goodness it's thin so that we can put thicker cases on them. LOL Anyway, I think we'll be ok with the battery. The 10mm process is supposed to draw less power, right? :) Anyway, to be honest, I've come to the realization that no battery will ever be enough (within reason of course.. not expecting a 10kma battery) because we will always end up pushing the limit. It's like wealth - the more money you have, the higher your lifestyle is. If they gave us a 4000ma battery, we'd probably use it more than we would before.

I read that, 1, resolution is set at 1080p and, 2, performance settings set at 'optimized' and not 'high performance' out of the box... that doesn't give me the warm fuzzys that battery life is outstanding. It's like the pop up notification telling you to clean you camera lens after smudging it from trying to press the FPS.

There is no proof of that speculation. There are many phones from Samsung with more battery capacity than 3500. We have many Samsung phones here with 4000/5000 mAh battery. There are many thing that goes to decide what capacity of battery they want. S7 and S8 have almost same total volume and total weight. Hence you could see that the battery capacity is same. Just because the screen size is more, doesn't mean that they have more volumes to put a bigger battery. I would have loved a bigger battery, but I guess this is the max that they can achieve with present technology. It's good that the battery this time will degrade less.
The Galaxy S8's new battery will degrade less quickly than the Galaxy S7's
